my daughter is on oxygen. She is 13 months old and has been on it since birth. She was weaned down to using it only as needed at around 2 months, but got very sick, and now requires it all the time. Has anyone else had an infant on oxygen? How long were they on it? What is the best way to wean from it? She has low muscle tone so she is just now learning to take her cannula out but as she gets more mobile it is going to be harder to keep in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not really wanting medical advice. I just wanted to see what others in this situation have done and what their timeline for weaning was. My daughter has chronic lung disease. it is called that because she has been on the oxygen so long. She has wonderful doctors following her. Her pulmanologist (lung doctor) seems confident that she will eventually come off the oxygen.

Maybe you could try pulling the canular behind her head so she can't pull it off? Or maybe use med tape some creative way. I sometimes sleep better this way myself when I feel constricted w/the hosing... I wouldn't try to wean her if she needs it, o2 is a medicine for pulmonary patients, unless your dr approves it ...

I must agree with the other answer, there is not near enough information to even remark on this child. It sounds like you have a very delicate situation that needs the close attention of medical professionals. This time is going to be difficult for you and your child. Please consider talking to some support groups in your area. You will be surprised at the coping skills you will learn, as well as some nifty tricks to keep that nasal cannula in the nose! trust your Dr., find the help, love your child, the rest of us will pray for a quick recovery. Good luck.

What is the reason that she has constant O2 needs? Is it cardiac or pulmonary? When you say cannula, do you mean nasal cannula or is she trached? I am asking because these can make the difference in the answers or advice I can offer.

sounds like she has a low birth weight. and oxygen is normal in that circumstance.
she should be on oxygen long enough to gain a normal weight. however long that will take will be up to her.
after she reaches a normal weight they will automatically take her off the oxygen.
and she will be on her own.
babies with a low birth weight come out of it just fine. [i did]!!
i was 5 pounds when i was born.
so do not worry!! she will be fine.

Please don't take on-line advice on this. You haven't even supplied the information of why she needs supplemental oxygen, and you're too likely to get poor advice on a very important subject.
