A: A yawn is a semi-automatic reflex that originates in the brain stem in response to a lower level of oxygen in the brain. Yawning also occurs when a person loses interest in their surroundings, i.e gets bored. It does not necessarily indicate fatigue, although people do tend to yawn when they're sleepy. A study was done in which heart rate, skin effects, and muscle tension were measured in 30 young adults before, during, and after yawns. They found that yawning did increase their level of arousal for a short time.

Actually no one knows why we yawn though there are several theories.

1. We yawn when we need more oxygen. If so, why don't we yawn while exercising?
2. It's evolutionary biology. We yawn when our brain is telling us to change activities.
3. We yawn when we are bored. However, athletes often yawn before a big event.

While reading all these answers, I yawned about 3 times. Yawning actually scientifically means that your brain is not getting enough oxygen.

no. It sometimes means you are not getting enough air to you lungs and you yawn to fill them up.
also, it shows that you are relaxed. You usually breathe like you are asleep and then you yawn just to keep the air in you lungs.
you also yawn if someone beside you yawns.
*yawn*
It can mean you are feeling a little sleepy.

Not necessarily, I yawn (excessively) when I am bored. But only when I am someplace where I should be showing interest. Like meetings that are sooooooooo boring.
