I wish to learn about heart sounds. I am aware of 4. S-1, 2,3, and 4. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but S-1 and S-2 are the Atrio-ventricular valves and semi-lunar valves opening and closing. If you could specify which is which on this too, that would be gnarly. And, of course, what are S-3 and S-4? Or if you so wish, you could just give me a complete run down of the sounds in your own way. The only reason I am asking this on-line instead of looking in my textbooks is: I have searched relentlessly for it and can't find it. So it would be much appreciated, thank you.

OK....
S-1 is the closure of the tricuspid and bicuspid (Atrio-Ventricular).
S-2 is the closure of the Aortic and Pulmonary Valves (Semi-Lunar)

S-3 and and S-4 can be pathological and is known as a gallop rhythm. They may be heard in the young and some adults after exercise, but in the elderly...pathological.

S-3 is the opening of the atrio-ventricular and the rapid refilling.
S-4 is a result of very high Enddiastolic Pressure and is rarely heard... cant remember specifically what the sound is (I think it is vibration of ventriular walls.. not sure)!

I simply dont believe that you couldn't find it (at least s1 & s2)in any textbook.
here is the answer anyway
s1 = closure of mitral & tricuspid valves.
s2 = closure of aortic & pulmonary valves.
s3 = atrial contraction against closed redundant mitral valve (it indicates heart failure possibly due to mitral incompentance)
s 4 = when the blood flows from the left atrium & hit a stiff ventricular walls (stiff walls are due to hypertrophy due for example to hypertension or HOCM).
you better read your books carefully.
