The first time I met my In laws I went all out. You might want to get them some gift certificates, I suggest getting them for a place to eat and a movie theater that way they can have a night out together. Place the certificates in a nice card, something sappy. Next you will need more things to fill the basket, try to stay with the together theme, perhaps hot chocolate and matching or his and her mugs. Also a nice candy goes over well not m&ms or kisses something classy, ferro rocher or hersheys pot of gold at the least. The goal of the basket is to treat them to something they wouldn't normally do for themselves so be prepared to spent a little more than usual (top shelf) you only get one chance to make a first impression.
Finally to top the basket off I bought really nice tree ornament and had it engraved to mark the occasion.
I've been married four years and i see the ornament on their tree every year.

Pick a theme. Since you don't know them well don't give them anything personal. The gifts should be conservative, something they will use, and moderately priced. Pick out a best seller or two from the New York Times Booklist, a reading light that attaches to the books, a couple of handmade (by you) book marks, and that should be lovely. Mayby toss in a couple popcorn bags and some candy or other munchies too. And, there is no reason why you couldn't carry that theme through with his siblings too, books or game cartridges and sour candy or popcorn. You sound like you really care so that will come through. His parents will love you.

Get some hand dipped candles that come in pairs. Also food like chocolates. I go to a merchantile that carries stuff like fried green tomatoe mix or specialty popcorns. Chowders that you just add water to. You can never go wrong with food. If you are into baking, maybe buy some mini loaf pans and whipping up some bananna nut or cranberry nut breads. You get 3 or 4 loaves per batch and these make great personal gifts. Good luck.

How about a good bottle of wine, some nice wineglasses, a unique corkscrew, and some interesting cheeses and crackers to go with it?

If they drink, some nice wine. If not, hot chocolate. Ask your boyfriend about their musical/movie tastes, and include a CD/DVD reflecting same. Tasty candies, nuts.
If this is a serious relationship, maybe a picture of both of you.
Perfumes and clothing aren't very good choices, as your tastes might not match theirs.

Everybody loves pasta. I would make a pasta basket -- tri-color pasta, garlic, pasta sauce, black olives, loaf of Italian bread or biscotti, canned clams, mozzarella cheese, bottle of chianti - and make a red, white & green theme. Happy Holidays.
