they mistaken you for a vegan. tell them you're a vegetarian, NOT a vegan. if the animal doesn't have to die, then it's all good.

It's alright to drink milk when you're a vegetarian. The people telling you that are thinking of veganism. Vegans do not eat any animal products whereas vegetarians just don't eat meat.

You can drink milk and still be a vegiterian because getting milk doesn't harm the cow/goat. Now if they misunderstood you and thought you were a "vegan" then they would be right. (vegans are like vegiterians but they don't have dairy products also.)

You're still vegetarian. lacto-vegetarian (opposed to vegan or other types of vegetarianism.)

But it isn't really ethical to drink milk either, because of the way they milk cows. It isn't killing them, but dairy cows aren't treated humanely. Milk isn't very healthy either. This is why vegans don't drink milk. But you should do what feels best for you, and don't let other people tell you that you're not a "true vegetarian" because you drink milk. You are vegetarian and you're helping animals.

I added some links, the first one is probably best.

There are many levels of vegetarianism up to and including vegans. Vegans eat no meat, cheese, or animal derivatives. However, the vegans I have known have no problem wearing leather gloves and leather shoes. I guess it is to whatever level one wishes to take it to. Why not google the 7th Day Adventists. They are vegetarians and very healthy, sensible, and open to questions about their dietary requirements. Googling vegans or vegetarians will also be informative.

You are a vegetarian, just not a vegan. Vegetarians eat milk and eggs. Vegans will not eat anything made with milk or eggs.

It depends on why you are a vegetarian. In general, vegans avoid all animal products, but vegetarians may consume dairy.

Milk is an animal product. I think people may be confusing you with someone who doesn't consume animal products of ANY kind.
