Fact: Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. If you have oral-genital sex with someone who has a cold sore, this virus can give you genital herpes. The likelihood of this is particularly high during a primary outbreak. Washing with soap and water after a sexual encounter can help decrease the risk of this type of transmission. Also, barriers such as dental dams can be used during oral sex to help protect against herpes and otehr STDs. Please see our safer sex page for more on this topic

You betcha! There used to be one Herpes virus that caused cold sores on lips and a different Herpes virus that caused genital herpes.
Evidently 50 years ago, oral sex was not common. Now you can find either Herpes virus either place. Either virus causes the same symptoms if it infects the genitals.
A person with a cold sore on the lips or anywhere on or in the mouth should not give oral sex until it is completely gone away. The adds for antiviral medication say that a Herpes infection of the genitals can infect the other person even if no symptoms are evident.
I don't know if this is also true about about mouth to genital contact but my x-wife and I never had any problems during 17 years of marriage but we were always careful not to give oral sex when either of us had a cold sore.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about 3 years back, whilst I was still attending college and had a silly one-night stand. I realize lots of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date men again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/wW5NB everything got better.
Not only was I able to eradicate all remnants of the herpes simplex virus from my system in less than three weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience true love again. Now I hope that I can help others by sharing this story.

If you get cold sores, you already have herpes simplex 1. This can be transmitted to other parts of your or someone else's body even without a cold sore being present.
