I've been eating a piece of fruit, but often my blood sugar is high and I want to eat something that doesn't make it higher. I am not taking insulin but take metformin in the morning. I'm thinking a vegetable might be the best, but will it absorb? Because I'm assuming that's the point of eating - to cushion the blow of the drugs. Thanks for your help.

Trazadone does not cause stomach upset. It is used primarily for sleep so its use at bedtime is needed. However the lovastatin (an anticholesterol medication) is recommended to be taken in the evening so that you can avoid being very active if muscle ache is a problem. Here is a website for patient leaflets on drugs. I have pointed to the direct page on Lovastatin. Please note the best time to take the medication in the section (HOW TO TAKE THIS DRUG)

You will need to ask your doctor for permission to change it's timing but I see no reason that it could not be taken with your evening meal instead of bedtime. That would avoid the need for a snack above and beyond your ADA diet and physician instructions call for.

Another option might be for you to take 1/2 tab at dinner and 1/2 tab at bedtime to lower any nausea/GI distress caused by taking the tablet.

The third option would be to reportion part of your dinner to be taken at bedtime. If you are on immediate acting insulin for meal times, there will need to be an adjustment in dose and possibly another shot with the bedtime snack.....As I stated before, these are options to bring up to your physician/ health care practitioner for approval and best way to handle this... but it is my best suggestions based on the additional information you have provided.

Hope that helps.... Merry Christmas : ) Bob

How about a couple of slices of turkey lunch meat? I'm not positive about your case but usually advice to take a medication with food is so that it doesn't irritate your stomach.

Lunch meat has calories so you need to adjust your diet so that your bedtime snack is part of your diet and not an add on. The problem with fruit is that it is full of sugar.

Actually, if you are diabetic, you should already have a bedtime snack as part of your diet. Your doctor that diagnosed your diabetes should have ordered a specific calorie diet for you or referred you to a diabetic clinic where a dietitian could tell you what diabetic diet was best for you and explained how to stay on it.

Slice of bread. Few crackers. Green beans. Cottege cheese. Meat certainly will not do much to your blood sugar. Unsugared yogurt.

You need to have a protein snack mid morning, mid afternoon and before bedtime to help keep your blood sugar level.
