I would suggest go to Wal-mart and use Ocean drops(saline) B.I.D. 2 per nostril, and at night use Vicks under your nose. If it is chronic ask your MD for Flonase.

If you can't get to the store and buy some saline nose spray and benadryl try mixing a small amount of salt and warm water and snort this up your nose. You can add a little Baking soda too to neutrelize the salt and the mucous but that is up to you. Just get the salt water into your nose. Do this a few times. Then you can also put a pot of water on the stove and boil it. Remove it and putting a towel over your head breathe in the steam from the pot. take the lid off and be careful not to burn yourself. You can put some vicks in there too if you want to. If you have any kind of antihistimine like benadryl take it as directed and it will help you sleep and unclog your nose. You can take two 25 mg. if you are over 100 lbs. That is all I know unless you go to the Dr. but I'd try the saltwater and you can buy the plain saline nose spray at the pharmacy tom. good luck. Benadryl is pretty easy on everyone, it makes you sleep though so don't take and drive or anything.

Although I agree that a steamy shower will open you up for a fairly brief interval (for me about 15 minutes), my strategy for dealing with nasal congestion from a cold is as follows:
When going to bed at night, I use Afrin 12 hour nasal spray. This assures me a good night sleep, as it will keep me clear for around 8 hours. Because there is a "backlash" effect with nasal sprays - meaning they can make your nose feel temporarily even stuffier after they wear off - I take Sudifed or equivilent during the day to take the edge off. Sudifed does not clear me up completely, but it does help, and it doesn't wire me up, or make me feel sleepy. Note I never take both simultaneously. By only taking Afrin at night, I avoid much of the 'backlash' problem common with those sprays. I find that if I take Afrin twice a day for more that a day or two, that my sinuses rebell and sieze for days, so I don't do that!
Lastly, I am convinced that Cold-eeze lozenges, though they taste crummy and can sour an emtpy stomach, really do work to shorten the duration and severity of a cold, if you take them as soon as you think you are getting a cold. When in doubt, take 'em.
Works for me.

I use a saline nasal spray, one for kids so it doesn't burn. You just spray it in your nose a couple of times and inhale deeply. In a few minutes everything will thin and all you do is blow your nose and it all comes out. Repeat as needed. I've been doing all day and it has really cleared my nasal passages and sinuses

There are lots of over the counter decongestants, but, I found taking a very hot shower and breathing in the steam for several minutes opens you up nicely.

Mucinex-- and OTC decongesant works the best. It used to be Rx only but recently became OTC.
