If there are no genetic defects, which is true for the average person, then the main reason for high triglycerides is having a diet that is high in saturated fats such as butter, fatty meat, coconut and palm oil. Also a diet low in fiber such as wholegrain bread or oat bran.

With all due respect to the other answerers but the real culprit is probably not the fat in the diet unless you do truly have a hereditary condition that causes the liver to not have triglyceride receptors. The most likely cause of high triglycerides is not your fat intake but rather your sugar intake.

Keep in mind that your body has to "decide" what to do with the food you eat in relatively short order after eating. If you are consuming large quantities of sugar your body will "decide" to store the endogenous (fat your liver makes) and exogenous (fat you eat) which will give rise to higher triglycerides, lower HDL (good cholesterol). The reason this happens is because simple sugars are easier for the body to burn and indicate to the body that there is an ample food source (historically represented by fruits) and that it should store the fat for leaner times ahead.

Watch your refined (simple carbohydrate) sugar intake and take some time to do some exercise.

Eating crap food high in saturated fat and hydogenated oils. Triglycerides are lipid in the blood, or fat cells if you will.
