Listen, you are going to gain some weight when you quit. Be realistic. I did but I also lost it. One thing at a time. I told myself the truth, I can breathe and live longer with some weight on me but, not if I can't breathe. So, just tell yourself that can be fixed after you get off the nicotine. It is a horrible habit and kills more people than anything else I would say. So, just do what you need to do and in 2 yrs. You will be a non smoker and at your regular weight too. That isn't a lot of time to get rid of that nasty habit and get back in shape. Of course the more active you are while you are quitting the less you will gain. Good luck. My husband, i hate him!!! Quit and gained no weight. Man are different, I guess. He took a pill, an antidepressent that helped him and he was a really heavy smoker. If he can quit any one can. good luck. Love and support coming your way.

Didn't know that biology every changed....I always thought that.

Anways, to answer your question (from the time I was educated in school about effects of smoking and what not), yes there is weight gain but it is so minimal. And if you were to actually gain weight generally it'll drop off quick unless you are substituting quiting smoking with added calories. Generally, if you want to ensure you aren't going to gain weight you'd have to really follow a healthy diet and excersise.

Though I do not want to condone smoking because those side effects are much more dangerous than this....smoking does speed up your metabolism but to a very small degree that just by diet and excersise you'd have a higher value.

But I have come across so many people that do not understand what a healthy diet is and that is why American's tend to be obese and rate of cancers are up on this continent.

Smoking does not speed up your metabolism.

People trying to quit smoking gain weight when they substitute eating for smoking.

As an ex-smoker and cancer survivor, I can tell you that smoking causes inflammation of your airway and lungs. NO ONE escapes this. When it reaches the point where you are having trouble breathing, the drug they give you is prednisone. The side effect of prednisone is weight gain. Not just a few pounds but 25, 50 to over 100 pounds. And you can't control it.

Have you ever seen Jerry Lewis when he does his Labor Day telethon? He is on prednisone. One of the hallmarks of prednisone use is a big round moon face.

So, quit smoking now and avoid all of that, or know that for a fact smoking will kill you one way or another but before it does you will suffer enormously.

The only reason people gain weight when they quit is because they substitute smoking for eating!

Those are TOTALLY normal. The nausea and the weight gain. Nicotine gives you a metabolism boost and also suppresses appetite. Also, your sense of taste will return once you quit, and you'll be hungrier plus things will taste better.
