In the morning she has a lot of congestion, runny nose, and cough. As the day goes on the symptoms are less. She had a 101 fever last night. She plays during the day and acts okay, except for when she had the fever. Do you think she needs to be seen or is it just a cold. My daughter hates going to the doctor. She is really terrified. I feel bad for her. I only take her when she really needs to be seen. Thanks for your advice.

If her fever persists for more than 3 days, or increases to a very high temperature, then you should take her to the doctor. Her cough could turn into pneumonia, and even more often, a child with alot of congestion will get an ear infection, and need antibiotics.
Hope she feels better soon.

I am sorry that she is ill and that she is afraid to go to the Dr. But, she probably should be seen if this persists much longer, the fever should not remain for too long or go too much higher. I am not a Dr. but you may be able to still get rid of this at home.

By the way, stop all sugar sweets if she eats any. The sugar stops your immune system from working properly, which if it was working, she would be better able to fight this off. Also, no dairy products, as this tends to make a problem with swallowing, the mucous thickens. Have her drink as much water as you can, no sugery drinks if possible.

For now watch her, and maybe try Vick's on her chest and back at night. It has always helped my daughter. Just be sure to wash it off the next morning. If the congestion is a problem, try a shower, sometimes that will help loosen a tight chest and help with breathing. Talk to a pharmacist about breathing vapors (the ones for the shower) you can purchase over the counter. I'm not sure if a 2 yr. old should, but he would know.

If the glands in her neck get swollen, that is usually a good sign that she has already begun to get rid of the "gunk" and should get better soon. This was the advice of my chiropractor, the glands had already done their job and going to a Dr. was really a waste of time and money. Plus no one needs to be on Medicines if they don't have to be.

If she has had a cold for a week and a fever last night, the viral infection (cold) may have led to a secondary (bacterial) infection. She may need to start on antibiotics. But only the doctor can really tell you that.
If your child is terrified of seeing a doctor, you may want to consider looking for another pediatrician that your child will be more comfortable with.
Your young child should not dictate whether she should go to a doctor or not. If there is a need to, you should bring her to a doctor.

I can understand that your child is afraid of the doctor but what kid isn't? I would take her in to be seen off and on fevers for more than three days usually is a rule of thumb that she need to be evaluated by a Doc........good luck.
