My friend asked me because he wants to become a vegan but now he is a vegetarian but he has heard many foods have animals by products in them. I want to know how much more do vegan friendly products cost? and how much do these imitation meats cost compared to meat and what about soy milk compared to milk?

Well, if your friend is talking about vegan foods that are packaged, pre-processed/pre-cooked products such as vegan Amy's Frozen Dinners or vegan deserts then it is cheaper (not taking into account the hidden health costs associated with eating animal products such as increased cholesterol, etc) to eat "regular" non-vegan products. However, if he is already eating vegetarian products (like, the non-vegan Amy's dinners) then there really isn't much difference in prices.

I'm not sure about the cost of soy milk vs cow's milk (as I've never really bought the cow kind), but I would guess it is probably more expensive than the average, rBGH(hormones)-tainted milk from cows raised in horrible factory "farms". However, the relative cheapness (again, not taking into account the hidden costs associated to health) of cow's milk is due to the heavy subsidizing by the Federal government (in the US) the dairy industry benefits from. So, its cheaper, but probably not "naturally" without the aid of the government/taxpayers.

Finally, if your friend is comparing the cost of non-processed/naturally-found vegan foods (basically fruits and vegetables) to "regular" foods, then vegan foods win by a large margin. Although fruits and vegetables also benefit from Federal subsidizing, they would still be far cheaper than animal products due to the simple fact that animal products are created themselves by fruits and vegetables PLUS all the extras that go into them to get them on your table (the slaughtering, the packaging, freezing, whatever).

So, to be a frugal vegan requires a diet that is (obviously) without animal products and also minimally or non-processed into packaged food. Drop the meat for ethical/health reasons, drop the processed-foods for fiscal reasons:)

well I think milk tastes bad and it is irrevolent to this question since this person wants to be a vegan, to the last person

I think that if you wanna go vegan you should try to steer clear of the soy products. I know you see adds everywhere saying it's so great and healthy. But a lot of times its way over processed and may be bad for you.

I read some stuff about it. Soy may increase estrogen production and have other lasting effects on other funtions.

When it comes to vegan food costs if you mainly go for whole food ingrediants , simlple things like vegtables, grains, and beans you can actually save. Some vegtables may be more expensive than meats but they are mainly not that costly. They certainly cost less than most soy products and are more worth while.

I think that "imitation meats" are pricey but they are good like the chk'n nuggets. Soy milk is a bit more than regular milk but it depends what kind you buy. For example I like Silk brand its 2.99. They have Soy Dream which is 1.50. Its all about taste. Soy milk also lasts for a long time so you can buy a few when they are on sale. Soy Cheese and Rice cheese are more than regular cheese but not by too much. The soy cheese I buy only costs 2.99 and regular cheese for the same bag is 2.50. So not much of a change.

Here is a website that you can check out... they have a list that shows brands of foods that are vegan.

$2.76 more compared to regular. The reason why they do this is
because soy is made from soy beans which grow from the ground. Therefore, it cost more compared to the cheaper whole milk which comes from the utters of a cow. The imitation meats
are distributed by the process. Overall, things cost more through the manurfacturing process.

Lets see, now.

A carrot is a carrot is a carrot.

An apple is an apple is an apple.

Soy milk generally costs more in terms of money than does cowsmilk. but money is only one way to determine cost. In the long run, given how much harm cows milk does to you, soymilk is cheap.

Your friend would be well served to learn how to identify animal byproducts on labels and read the labels. His local vegetarian society/association can help with that list.

Milk from a cow is 2.59 per gallon. But soy milk is 2.50 per half gallon, so you'd actually be paying 5 dollars for a whole gallon of soy milk.

I could understand buying the soy milk if you were allergic to lactose, but if you have no lactose allergies, then please help out the dairy farmers of America and BUY REAL COW MILK! It's cheaper and it tastes better, and you can get skim milk which is FAT FREE!!!

Fat free milk is really good for your diet, drink 3-4 glasses a day and it helps you lose weight, by getting the nourishment, protein and calcium that you need for a strong healthy body.

the vegeterian food, except vegetable, which is already made or frozen like vege crab, vege shrimp, vege chicken... which are made of soybean anr soy protein, are more expensive than normal food like chicken, beef, but you should tell your friend that vege food and imitation food are much different, b/c vege crab is made out of soybean and wheat protein and other ingredients which is not animal products, however, the imitation crab meat contains eggs, fish b/c I checked it out the other day at a market so I know about it. So the best is check out at the label to see what ingredients in that products.

Soy milk is cheaper, and it is shelf stable! So when you get it on sale, you can get a few... and it lasts!

Faux meat is more expensive and it's too processed, I wouldn't recommend it as part of a normal day to day diet.

Fresh fruits, veggies, grains and beans... much cheaper than both meat and faux meats.

Health food stores always have tons of options. Otherwise, just look on the labels for things not tested on animals. I know Mario Badescu skincare products are not tested on animals.
