I'm not someone who struggles with quitting smoking. But....I'm told that there are several keys to quitting.

1. Admit that it's an addiction - a powerful addiction that you are probably going to need some help with.

2. Be willing to get help. The patch. A phone buddy. A support group. Gum. Lollipops. Whatever it takes, and don't care about looking ridiculous.

3. Set a deadline on the day you're going to quit. This is one of the single most powerful things you can do. New Year's is a great time. Smoke every damn cigarette you want up until then. Say, out loud, every time you light up until then, "I am quitting on New Year's". It makes it easier to stick to it.

4. If you fail, try again. Try again. Keep trying. You can fail lots of times. The vast majority of people that quit smoking do it only after failing to quit at least 5 times! You only have to succeed once. :)

5. Find other people who want to quit and quit together! It's also easier to lose weight with a diet buddy.

I'm not an addicted smoker, but this is good advice and I wish you success. Happy new year!

Practice. Pick a day next week when you are not going to smoke. Think about that future day, imagine what it will be like, and make a decision not to smoke on that particular day. This will let you now what quitting will be like. Keep practicing - making a decision not to smoke on a particular future day. At first you may not make it through a whole day. Do not let it get you down. If you can't go a whole day then start with half days or even just hours. Remember, you did not start smoking all at once, so no need to quit all at once.
Find something to replace smoking. If you make it through a day - then spend however much you would have spent on smokes on something else. Save for something you want - but not a big pricey item at first. Just something cheap like a music download or a book. If you really miss smoking then try a nicotine replacement product. Remember - you would have spent the money anyway.
The universal truth to quitting is that you have to really want to quit. If you don't want to quit - for whatever reason, then you will not be able to. You cannot make yourself do it. To smoke is a decision. You decided to smoke. Now make a decision not to smoke.
Finally, don't beat yourself up if you can't do it the first time. It may take many times to quit. Just keep practicing.

Dont do cold turkey. Use the patch, Zyban and even the gum when you really need it. I did and Im smokeless for over 4 years. Dont feel bad if you arent sucessful the first time. It takes most people 2 or 3 times to quit for good but you gotta really want to quit. Set a date and mentally prepare for it. After a couple weeks it will get easier but dont ever let your guard down. You can never have even a drag of a smoke ever again if you really wanna quit. Otherwise you'll be right back where you started in no time. Also focus on the positive things quitting will do for you.

cold turkey is the only way to go I quit smoking about 5 years ago I just woke up and was out of cigarettes and I went a few hours without having one so I said I've gone this long I
might as well just quit it was really hard I lived in a house full of smokers and everyone in my family smokes but somehow I just did it and after you quit you realize how horrible it smells and it sticks to your clothes. I had dreams about smoking for about 4 years but now they have finally stopped. So go Cold Turkey it is the best way to go good luck!

the best way to quit smoking cigarettes is to stop. Try keeping your mind occupied with something else. If you would usually have a cigarette in the morning, try something different. Maybe exercise. Be creative with whatever it takes for you to be successful. Most of all be committed to the cause. Commitment can take you far. If you do not succeed this time, keep on trying. It is not hard to quit but it is hard to stay free from cigarette.

First believe you can quit and want to quit. Second if you believe in God go get prayed for (this worked for me)... Third get some help from your friends, family etc... Fourth buy the patch/gum/pills etc... Fifth go to an hypnotist, Sixth do some independent studying on the effects/affects of smoking and Seventh get some counseling If none of this works then keep smoking and enjoy your self...

Since nicotine is one of the biggest drugs in the world and legal (along with alcohol) many companies and insurance plans will cover the cost of quitting.
One is addicted to the nicotine, one needs to ween themselves off of this. Smoking a couple packs at one time is not going to help this. My father went through this technique. He also went through the hypnosis with no luck.
If someone is stopping because they want to there is more of a success rate. If one is stopping because of family or societies pressures more then likely one will not stop.
Go to the doctor first, if you want help with the cost treatment. Get a prescription for the best choice, your doctor will go over this with you.
Some of the drugs out there used are harmful, like Welbutrin in people with epilepsy. Just be careful.
Good luck!

I used a combination of hypnosis and looking at medical sites with all too graphic examples of lung cancer. I still smoke a CAO cigar about once a week, but it's a lot better than the pack of Camel Menthol Lights I used to inhale on a daily basis.

I stopped by feeding the craving with unlit cigars. I would put them between my lips, unlit ,until the craving subsided.
Then I would gradually reduce the time I spent with it in my mouth. When I had overcome the withdrawal symptoms, and the addiction, I ended the cigar use.
