I am currently a vegetarian, and have been for four years. But I would like to become a vegan. Does anyone have any good recipes for vegan yogurt, or any good vegan recipes in general? Thanks for your help. Happy holidays!!!

What my wife did was buy a yoghurt maker and just used soy milk instead of milk. Typically, the bacterial culture/enzyme packets you can purchase for making yoghurt is not animal derived anyway. It will turn out watery, as all yoghurt used to be watery, not thick. I don't know how the dairy industry makes theirs thick or when that started, but there are various ways to make it thick. You can even use a tofu preparation method, or add ingredients the manufactures of soy yoghurt use, such as guar gum etc. which do not require heat to thicken.

Note: every maker of yoghurt used their own combination of certain enzymes and or bacterial culture to perfect their original flavour. Much like making bread. My wife’s favourite brand is Solgurt www.solcuisine.com plain flavour, and I have to agree that it tastes the most like yoghurt is supposed to taste. She also made her own soy-yoghurt by using some of the Solgurt as a starter. It half-worked, but I think that it would take a while to make it powerful enough taken from the original product. You’d have to ‘grow’ it like a bread starter I imagine. Otherwise, just try the starter packets and check other manufactured soy yoghurts for thickener ideas.

The recipe ATL Girl gave you is not Vegan. Jello (gelatin) is not vegan. Gelatin is made from boiling the bones, skins and tendons of animals.

Have you checked PETA's website for recipes, I get a lot of good ones from there.

VEGAN RECIPE!!!

3/4 cup boiling water
1 (1/3 ounce) box Jello gelatin (this is a sm box of SF Jello. Reds and orange taste best.)
1/2 cup cold water (ice cubes to = 1 cup)
1 cup vanilla yogurt (I use fat free)
1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)

Dissolve Jello in boiling water.
Add enough ice cubes to cold water to make 1 cup and add to dissolved mixture.
Add yogurt and whip with a whisk.
I do not use vanilla.
Pour into individual bowls/containers and chill.
Tip: I usually make this in a 4c measuring cup makes pouring into container so easy.
ENJOY!!!
