Hello Dear...
Divided glass dishes somewhere between 9" and 12" in diameter are appropriate for "relish trays"...
In formal settings, they should include any number of "pickled" things, but no fresh veggies. Spiced apple rings, pickles, Pickled peppers, spiced pickled pears, pickled mushrooms, etc....
It can be done rather nicely, and can be as simple or extravagant as you wish. The tray must be divided, however, and the items well drained to avoid mixing of flavours.
If it is appealing enough, yes, people will eat off of it.
If you are new to the group, it is not an insult, as women tend to get "territorial" over what they like to make, and each one has their favourites which they will not give up. Usually, it is best to bring an additional item, like a dessert, to show them that you can actually cook as well. Is there a dessert that you are particularly good at making?? Bring that as well as the "relish tray".
Namaste,
--Tom
P.S. Don't forget the little serving forks for the tray....it'll show the hostess that you have a little class.

Having been to many semi-formal dinners, relish trays are usually simple. Black & green olives, carrot & celery sticks, small dill or sweet pickles (not both), green onions, pepperoncini peppers. Sometimes cherry tomatoes, just a few. Anything more and then you have vegetable tray. A relish tray is just a small nibble before the soup or salad is served. They are usually on the table when the doors open since guests arrive at different times, it gives them something to much on. Of course, you can have everything if you want, cheese cubes, cranberry sauce, but then it really isn t a relish tray as I mentioned already.

A relish tray consists of olives (black and green) pickles, celery, (you can stuff the celery with cream cheese) you can put scallions (green onions) cherry tomatoes. You just put them on a platter. Or plate if you dont have a platter. arrange them next to each other and something in the middle. NO need for dips, not included in a relish tray.

I make a relish tray for Thanksgiving every year, because it is a way to serve light foods for people who don't want a big entree and sides. It also has foods kids like and think are fun:I usually have small spears or slices of 2 kinds of pickles-something you can eat with your hands. Also, pitted black olives and green olives without pimentos. I'd love to hear other suggestions.

Whatever you like to munch on....black olives, blue cheese stuffed green olives. If you think they asked you to bring this because they think you can't cook then I would go for EXOTIC relishes.....artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, white asparagus...and yes, it has to look good on the table, but you can make it look good on an aluminum tray, just buy some of that flat leaf lettuce and cover the whole tray with the lettuce and then pile the relishes up on different areas of the tray. Men seem to like relish trays, they pick and pick at them while the meal is being prepared....at least, that's how it is in my family.

Anthing you want. You can put baby carrots, celery sticks, cauliflower and broccoli flowerettes, you can put cubed cheese, a dip that you like.
You can make a fruit or meat tray instead.
Your tray can be anything you like, but I would prefer to use a disposable one, so you can leave it or thow it a way. Available in the baking section of a grocery store.
I suggest to put lettuce leaves on the bottom of an aluminum tray. Buy a dip and put it in the center and circle your veggie's around it.
OR you can just go to grocery store and buy a predone one. Relish tray can be a lot of work. :)

You could use any plate, platter, or tray as long as you make sure you get it back after the party. A good variety of items to put on would be... dill pickle spears, bread and butter slices, green olives, black olives, pickled vegetables (they come in jars... cauliflower, carrots, etc.) Personally, I don't like anything on relish trays besides dill pickles, but I guess other people do, or they wouldn't have asked you to bring it.
