My father used to rave about his mother's version which contained sweetened condensed milk and caraway seed. He said it was low, like a pizza. She was originally from Alsace. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

I would venture to try this one you didn't say if it was a sweet or savory dish. With the sweetened condense milk it seems sweet but all the ones that I found were savory. Do you think your father meant evaporated milk?
Ingredients
2 cups coarsely chopped onions (3 large)
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
4 teaspoons baking powder
5 tablespoons vegetable shortening
3/4 - 1 cup milk
1 egg, well beaten
3/4 cup sour cream
2 teaspoons poppy seeds
1/4 teaspoon paprika
Method
In medium skillet, sauté the onions in butter over low heat until they just begin to brown, about 15 minutes. Season with 1/4 tsp of the salt, the marjoram and the pepper. Set aside to cool.
Preheat oven to 450ºF.
In a food processor bowl place flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and the remaining salt; mix. Add the shortening and process just until it is the texture of soft crumbs. Add the milk and mix quickly to form a soft dough.
Oil a 10 inch spring form and lightly use your fingers to spread the dough out evenly.
Spread the cooked onion over the top. Beat the egg and sour cream together. Spoon the mixture over the onion, and spread it out to the very edge of the pan. Sprinkle lightly with poppy seeds and paprika.
Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool slightly, then cut into wedges.

3 c Unbleached Flour
1 tb Shortening
1 c Water; 120 to 130 Degrees F.

Mix yeast, sugar, 1 t salt, and 1/2 cup flour. Blend in shortening and warm water. Beat for 2 minutes. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Knead dough until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let dough rise in a warm place 1/2 hour. Pat dough into a lightly greased 12-inch pizza pan or onto a lightly greased baking sheet. Press up edges to make a slight rim. Fry bacon until crisp. Remove from grease and drain on absorbent paper. Add onions to bacon grease; cook slowly until tender but not brown. Sprinkle onion, bacon, cumin, 1/2 t salt and pepper over dough. Bake at 400 Degrees F. for 20 minutes. Blend egg yolk and sour cream. Pour over onions. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes longer or until golden brown and sour cream is set. Serve warm or at room temperature.

I think I've heard of Onion Pie - though it seems more like a quiche. I cannot find a recipe in my collection, however.
I just typed: onion pie
in my Google search bar. The third link down is called "German Onion Pie". I don't know how to copy and paste, or send it to you, whatever, so Google onion pie and give the link a click!
