Usually it lasts a few weeks or until your body removes the phlegm stored up in the bottom of your lungs.

When you quit smoking, the cila in your lungs (little hair like fingers) start waking up and doing their job which is to remove foreign objects from the lungs.

When you smoke, the nicotine paralyses the cila so it hasn't worked well for however long you smoked.

If you were a heavy smoker, the more phlegm you will have in your lungs and the more you will cough up.

But hang in there, there will be a day that you won't have a smoker cough and you will have a body that works correctly again.

Good luck!

phlegm is from the lungs cleaning themselves, Odds are you will cough up some every time you have a cold.

If you don't cough up, there is a lung problem

You will still be bringing up some of the tar that you inhaled during your period of smoking. You will never cough up all of it, only the loose particles that have not permanently attached themselves to your lungs.
