There are several accepted ways of making the diagnosis of diabetes, the most common of which (and probably the easiest to do) is to take a fasting blood glucose, which should be below 126 (if it's higher, always repeat the test before making a diagnosis).
You can also make a determination based on postprandial glucose, and that is actually more sensitive, but much more difficult and inconvenient to do, it involves fasting, then taking a precisely metered amount of sugar, then taking serum glucose levels 2 hours afterwards.
If you ate before taking a fingerstick, it's going to make it hard to interpret, but the blood tests you're talking about may include a serum glucose measurement, which would be fasting (at least in the situation you described) and should thus give you the sort of information you're looking for.

They take the test fasting to see if there is still sugar in the blood that the body hasn't been able to remove. Basically you want the fasting glucose to be below 100. Higher than 100 can indicate insulin resistance (prediabetes) and much higher can indicate diabetes. I'd recommend a fasting insulin test as well.

As long as you did not take the sugar before the test, you should be OK. They want a fasting result. If you have high numbers they may want to run the fasting the insulin test or do a glucose tolerance test. This test is where they give you sugar to drink and take blood tests after set period of time.

I have insulin resistance and I got put on Metformin HCL ER and it has helped to lower my blood sugars and also helped me to lose a little bit of weight. I no longer drink soda at all and that has helped as well. So if you get a diagnosis of insulin resistance, there are things you can do to delay or stop a diabetes diagnosis.

You have to take the test first thing in the morning without having eaten anything at all to have an accurate result. If you eat anything before the test you'll probably be more concerned because it will for sure show you a higher sugar level. I would advise you to take a blood exam and take it to the doctor in order to find out if you have diabetes or not. Usual symptoms for diabetes are frequent urination and also feeling thirsty all the time is a sign of this disease.

Feeling weak after fasting for 13 hours is perfectly normal and does not mean you are diabetic. How were you planning to check your blood sugar? Norm is usually 90 to 110 or 120 2 hrs after eating. But, if you truly have concerns, you should be properly tested by a doctor. A one time do it yourself test is NOT a diagnosis of diabetes.

Normal blood sugar is between 90 and 120 (with a + or - 5, depending on the doctor). Tell-tale signs of "unconttrolled" diabetes is insatiable thirst, frequent urination, and excessive weight loss or weight gain (in a short period).

I am living with Type II diabetes and still enjoy a healthy, quality of life. There are long term ramifications of having diabetes but can be prolonged, if not controlled by proper diet, exercise, and healthly patient/ doctor relationship.

Good luck to you!

3 ways to diagnose diabetes:

1. A fasting plasma glucose test measures your blood glucose after you have gone at least 8 hours without eating. A blood sugar of 126 or above on 2 separate occasions can diagnose diabetes.

2. An oral glucose tolerance test measures your blood glucose after you have gone at least 8 hours without eating and 2 hours after you drink a glucose-containing beverage. A blood sugar of 200 or above on 2 separate occasions can diagnose diabetes.

3. A random blood glucose level of 200 mg/dL or more, plus presence of the following symptoms, can mean that you have diabetes:

* increased urination
* increased thirst
* unexplained weight loss

were you given a secondary test?

there is a fasting test that is given -to determine your count there

there is also a second test that could be given where you are given a measured amount of sugar and your blood drawn several times in the next two-three hours to see how your body deals with the sugar

my fasting test was 300 - yep I am a diabetic 2

don't worry, you will know when you see your Doctor for the results

Since you are concerned, go to an endocrinologist and have a full work up.

Good luck.
