Pacemakers is put for patients who either has slow heart beat (<50 beats/min) or the heart nerves doesnt work properly, there will be a pause in between the heart beat for more then 5 seconds.
Pacemakers will be put in the chest, in between the layer of tissues. It will basically send electrical wave and 'pace' the heart when it beat too slow or when it goes into pause.

Its relatively a safe procedure and patient only have to stay for 2-3 days before he/she can be discharged from the hospital.
Afterwards, the patient will be piut under regular medication too; either its to help regularize the heart beat, to dilute the blood, etc..its depends on individual health condition.
Im working in the heart department, i hope my information help..
