No I dont think its a strain of herpes. Its a virus that causes warts or cervical dysplasia. Its the major cause of cervical cancer. Many people who have HPV are not even aware they have it. You do not always have warts- most dont. There are different severities of it, as I understand. Low, mid, and high grade. It can be dealth with by diagnosis and biopsy, then removal of abnormal cervical cells. I am also told that abnormal cells sometimes will go away on their own, and the body has the ability to heal itself of the virus. I also am dealing with HPV right now, and am a nurse. This whole thing sucks!

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world.Genital warts (sometimes called condylomata acuminata or venereal warts) are the most easily recognized sign of genital HPV infection. Many people, however, have a genital HPV infection without genital warts.

HSV has two types type 1(oral) and type 2 (genital).Many people who are infected with HSV do not show any signs or symptoms. For example, women infected on the cervix will have little or no symptoms of any kind. But when symptoms do occur (called an outbreak), genital herpes causes painful blisters on the thighs, genitals, or rectum that break open and turn into sores.

Simply put, the symptoms are very different.. These viruses are totally different from each other but both are sexually transmitted.

HPV = warts and increase probability of cervical CA (strains 16, 18, 45 and 31)
HSV= blisters

What you need to be concerned with dear is whether the strain you became infected with is one of the many that could turn cancerous. A simple PAP smear from your GYN or PCP can determine the exact strain of virus.
