my dog gave birth to her first litter yesterday and on her second pup while i was out of the room she gave birth to another pup and neglected to get the sack off because her first was crying? i later found it that night becasue she kept going back into that room and under the bed. i found it still in the sack filled with liquid. why did she do this, it has me confused? was it becasue she was confused with her first litter? or because she didn't want it?

I am so tired of reading peoples honest questions for help on here and then seeing all the mean replies about how terrible a person is for having a litter of puppies. All of you so called responsible, do it right, long term, and show breeders, take a minute to reflect on yourselves. You breed dogs that are brought into this world in search of a true breed standard. Can you say all of your puppies are in safe homes forever. No, that would be impossible to be true. So, someone who odviously only has a pet, decides to have a puppy, is terrible. What about the hundreds put out by good breeders? Stop breeding your dogs and start a rescue instead. NO, I dont think you will. So, stop attacking people who are asking your help. She didnt ask if she should breed the dog. She was truly hurt and concerned about the puppy. I also know from experience, if you have ever raised any breed, you have lost a puppy at some point. I am just saying, stop with all this you are a bad person stuff to these people asking questions and give them constructive advice.

The puppy may have died anyway, even if you had been there. Do not beat yoruself up about it. The mother dog was new and scared. Even the most experienced breeders lose a puppy. It could have been stress or a sick pup. There is no certain reason. Puppies have issues. There is a condition called failure to thrive. It simply means a puppy fails to live and there arent always expalinations for it. If you do decide to breed again, learn from your mistakes. Every breeder out here that is a good breeder has had to do the same. No one started out perfect. Good luck with the puppy you have and dont worry too much over the one she lost. Nature is a tough old way to go sometimes.

There's a few reasons why she might have done this. First, it's her first litter and while most dogs know what to do and how to take care of their puppies, some dogs take a couple litters to perfect that maternal instinct. Second, there could be a problem with the puppy that she left. Dogs and cats will often abandon a newborn that they sense to have problems that will keep it from surviving. Third, she could have a problem with her milk supply, though usually it would be after the puppies had started nursing that she would push one away. If she doesn't have enough milk for all the puppies, a dog will sometimes push away the smallest or weakest puppy in order to provide only for the strongest pups.

If I had to guess though, I'd go with the first reason only because you said she kept going back under the bed. It's almost like she knew something was wrong, but wasn't quite sure how to fix it. And if she were totally abandoning the puppy due to health problems, she wouldn't have kept going back to it.

It's definitely worth giving your vet a call though to see if they think she needs to be brought in to rule out any health problems.

Surprisingly this is quite common with first litters. The mother is inexperienced and didn't know what to do. Never leave a whelping dog alone as this is what can happen, or worse.

Dogs are not thinking creatures like we humans are, and an inexperienced first timer can become overwhelmed if a puppy is crying. Instinct drives them to take care of the "squeaky wheel" and ignore what is happening to them. Their mothering instinct is very strong. They will hardly leave their litter to go "potty", drink or eat. Make sure you take her food and water. She will be very hungry until her pups are weaned. She is burning lots of calories producing milk, and nursing her pups. If you don't feed her extra she will be taken down as the pups will take what they need from her regardless.

Please have her spayed after this litter.

I know this may be hard for you to understand but not all dogs want to have babies. I have found most really don't. Once I start weining them mom is more than happy to move on. If she only had two and the second one was still born you need to get her to a vet ASAP to make sure there isn't a puppy carcass in her.

Smaller dogs often have more trouble with birth especially if she was impregnanted by a larger breed. I rescued a beagle once that we did have to bust the sack but she also had rottie puppies.

It's part of their natural instinct. I'm sure she's a good momma. That pup was probably ill & wouldn't have made it anyway. There's also a very good likelyhood that it was still born to begin with, so the momma just let it go while she tended to the ones who needed her.

You clearly should not be allowed to even own a dog, never mind breed. Why was she not in a whelping box? Where were you? This puppy died because you don't have ANY knowledge - and this poor dog didn't know what to do, didn't feel safe with her puppies and was left to fend for herself.

Get her spayed before she gets bred again!

Will wonders never cease, I agree with Tyke completely.
It was your responsibility to protect and help her during labor.
You stated it was her 1st litter, how was she supposed to know what to do?
Due to your lack of concern and foresight, you lost a puppy that may have been just fine, (we will never know now) simply because you were not with the mom when she was in labor.

because she know something was wrong with it and that it wasn't going to make it or it might have already been dead when she gave birth to it! It's hard I know but I know from experience my parents use to bread pug's and I have seen are dog's do the samething it's hard for her too!

Probably because she was confused and didn't know what to do. That's why good breeders STAY WITH THEIR GIRLS when they're expecting them to whelp. If the dam doesn't break the sac right away, YOU have to. And why was she wandering around?
