It is possible to make prints from negatives. That is how prints were made in the first place. Retouching should not cause much problem, but dirty or scratched negatives may affect the result. The printing process is basically a matter of exposing light sensitive paper to light focused through the negatives which are mounted in an enlarger. The enlarger is a sort of stand with a light, a film holder and a lense for focusing the picture. After the photo paper has been exposed to light, it must be developed through a series of chemical baths and dried.

Im not a proffessional but im sure that when you get the photos back they give you the negatives aswell so that you can take them back to be reprinted. i would have thought if the negatives are dirty then they would produce dark spots on the photo.

You can still use the negatives but if they are damaged then the photos will not be perfect quality. Just take them along to your local photo shop & tell them what you want printed

Photograph studios do print photos from very old
negatives even negatives on glass.
it doe`s not matter if they are damaged a good studio
can restore them.
Visit a studio in your town and they will give you good advise
or ring them on the phone.

Use a scanner with ICE program. Like a Epson Perfection 4490 PHOTO.

that's what negatives are for. I've had copies made from negatives that were 15 years old. You just have to let whoever you take it to, send it away to their off-site lab to get it developed.

If you have a scanner, then you can scan the negative and repair any imperfections in Photoshop.
It isn't easy, but it is worth doing
