Even 2 or 3% inflation (which is STILL very very low) means that the prices that manufacturers pay more this year for the raw materials that go into their products than they did last year...
Over a course of a few years, this means that the entire profit margin disappears, unless the makers either raise the retail price of the product, or lower their costs in some way.
WalMart has really strict rules regarding the retail prices they are willing to sell stuff for, and wants to keep "iconic" holiday items at the low prices people expect.
The only way to compromise is to reduce the number of cherries in a box.
Buy an extra box, or move up to the gourmet kind you have to buy from a real chocolates shop.

yea im not suprised, i noticed something about east vs west usa, in the east the super pretzels you get in the frozen section, well they're more full bodied than the ones on the west coast, about 50% bigger...and to think you actually have to pay MORE money on the west coast (at least california, thats where i also live)
