first of all I'd like to say Merry Christmas and well done... remembering that its the thought that counts. I think its very mature of you to include your step father in your gift giving list even though you don't like each other. The holidays are a really hard time of the year for some people and the little things can compound the situation.
I agree with all the people who said get him a gift card. He can pick out something he likes or wants and then there is no one to blame if he doesn't like it, but himself.
As for your brother, how about an itunes gift card (if he has an ipod or mp3 player). I got one for my husband for his birthday and he at first was like, whatever, but then he really got into it and ended up loving the fact that he could go buy himself a song everyday if he felt like it. He also loved the fact that he could buy songs that he hadn't heard in a really long time.
It may seem kind of hokey, but magazine subscriptions might be a possibility. You can find a magazine for EVERY hobby, interest or profession. You can also find really reasonable rates on line if you have the time to search and compare. Just be careful, if you find a deal that is too good to be true it might not be legit. I tried to order a subscription one time and it never came (I didn't get billed for it, so no harm done except the person had to wait forever to get their gift.)
Hope you have a great Christmas.

I think that you could do something for your brother like give him a gift cert. for a massage or tell him you will take him to lunch once a month for like 6 monthes or something.
As far as the stepdad,,, that's a hard one,, I am super big on gift cards again,, if he has a favorite resturant,, or coffee shop or something,, do that,, if not,, do something super corney like a tie or socks,, and hopefully everyone would get the joke,, and then maybe go ahead and do a gift card also,, but just try something out of the ordinary to make him smile?
Or you could tell him since you didn't know what to get him,, you donated the money to a charity that buys toys for kids,, you might do that with your brother too,, I mean get them them a very nice card with a hand written note explain to them what you did,, say something to your brother like,, since you really didn't need anything I choose to help someone who did.
Good luck!!

For the hateful step-dad: Tools. Men cannot get enough tools. For about 35 dollars you can get something at Sears, a new flashlight, a cordlesss drill would do,.
For your brother, I will add to teh pocket know idea. They sale now a Swiss armty knife with a MEMORY stick attachched to it! I think is the best and yoru brother would love it. I saw them at amazon.com
Good luck

Find out something he truly believes in and give money to an organization that is associated with his belief system. Then, get a receipt and/or make up a card documenting such charitable gift and give to your stepdad. He will find you a most thoughtful person and the expectation of having to open up something and say "awww, gee, thanks so much" will not have to be dealt with, instead, an adult "thank-you" will suffice. I never give anyone gifts anymore as I find it to be just a disgusting ritual for anyone of the age of 12.....I give to organizations that the people believe in ..... sometimes, with friends that don't have too much money I will give them a check made out to their phone and cable companies so to pay their bill that month. good luck, Jack

If you already decided to get your bro a pocket knife, then get him just that. Do not feel compelled to keep buying if you are short on cash.
As for the stepdad, get him a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant, book store, the movies, or movie rental place.

I never have any money around christmas time so I always buy stupid presents to make people laugh. I will buy my Dad some Lingerie, My 38 year old sister those pretend fish that are in a fish tank and ask her to give them names. A whoopi cushion...One of those test tubes with a cigarette in it that says break in case of emergency. I find that if people have everything then go silly and get a laugh. For someone who hates everything give him something a bit naughty and silly and everyone else will laugh but him.. Who cares though..Its Christmas.. he can't knock you for giving him a present no matter what it is... especially if everyone else is laughing.
Good luck and Merry Christmas

Go to a fabric store and buy a tiny bit of colored net-like fabric(google it if you are not sure what I mean by that) Cut it into small squares and put pieces of candy in the middle. Use ribbon to tie it together and make a little decorative candy bag

I saw Rachel Ray on Oprah the other day. She made what she called a 5 minute fudge. Do a search for it on Oprah.com. Maybe you can stick with your original plan then.
