I admit I'm an academic, all brain and no common sense- I can do next to nothing with my hands but I'm very interested in practical skills; everything from plumbing to building and furniture making. However can someone who is a born academic with no talent for practical work be taught it after 21 years or do you have to have a natural 'touch'?

Thanks!

You're not that much of an academic if you put a question like this under Religion BUT, Yes, anybody can be taught to do practical things, especially if they need them in their everyday life.

Well I can do no better than to repeat an old quotation.

"he can tell you the square root of a jam jar but he can't get the lid off".

but of ocurse you can learn these skills, and it can be FUN. Why not try building models, in particular those battery operated, radio controlled cars. You will develop a broad range of practical skills in this way. - electrical- manual dexterity, etc. Leave the sharp tools alone for now, though.

Besides if I had to choose between having BRAINS or manual dexterity, I know which I would rather have!!

You have the desire to learn; therefore, you can. The desire to learn is 90%. So, go ahead and try your hands at something that interests you. You obviously have the intelligence; therefore, I believe that you can develop excellent practical skills if you put your hands in the hands of a competent teacher. Fear is what defeats most people. Get rid of the fear and doubt and only God knows what you can do.

Yes, how do you think you became an academic? It takes time, but if you work at it you can become decent.
