They all grow at different rates and it makes a difference if the dog naturally wears them down on sidewalks vs. a country dog running in dirt all the time. You really can't put a time frame on it.

When the nail has about 1/4 inch growth past the quick (The nail bed) it's time to trim it back (Or have it trimmed by a professional).

Dogs who do not walk on hard surfaces should have their nails trimmed about once a month. But puppies and very young dogs need them trimmed more often cause they grow faster. If you are not experienced doing it but you want to do it yourself ,go to a groomer or just ask your vet to show you how .it is very easy . I have 4 dogs and I have been cutting their nails for 6 years total and have never made them bleed but it is more difficult for dogs with black nails. Just in case go to a pet store and buy some styptic powder to stop the bleeding just in case you should cut one two short.

If you can do it yourself, I recommend clipping a little bit weekly. This way they don't have a chance to get out of control, and the nail clipping becomes routine and not a big deal.

If you are unable to do the nails yourself, then at least get him to the groomer for nails once a month.

All dog's are different. Check the nails, if they're clicking on the floor, it's time to trim them.
