Well your NON HD ready TV will still give you a picture UNTIL they turn off the OLD TV signal.....

Then you will need a HD READY TV with a HD Cable box, or a HD Satellite box or a HD set top box for local channels.....

If you already have an HDMI connector on your TV, those BOXES will connect to it....BUT in Low Definition (aka SD)

Your picture quality is determined as much by your TV set as the signal going into it.

High Definition is a separate digital format within the "standard digital" SDI (Serial Digital Interface) signal. If your digital set is not HD-ready (I am assuming this means it has no internal tuner) it may simply downconvert the HD signal to SDI. Separate HD tuners are available, though often not advertised due to the lower cost. While there is a noticeable difference between an HD picture and a SDI (often an analog signal run through a digital converter) picture, not all programs are in HD, either.

If your biggest concern is picture quality, you need to look at your TV screen resolution first (a whole 'nother issue!).

HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) is a high-quality home theater setup allowing a digital (including HD) signal to pass, but it does not change the format. So the HDMI cables may give an HD signal to your TV, but if the TV does not recognize HD format, it will not do anything.

No, you need to buy a HD ready TV. Ask your local retailer or check online.

The types of TV sets that display High Definition (HD) pictures are Plasma and LCD TV's.

In addition to getting the right TV you have to get the right digital decoder to watch HD TV.

At the moment Sky are running a service in the UK for High Definition customers with the Sky Plus feature. At the moment this is the only way for people to view a high definition signal.

After TV viewing there is the aspect of DVD's etc... there are two main HD decoders for films. These take in two formats Blue Ray and HD DVD's - currently the Playstation 3 will have a blue ray decoder in it for you to watch high definition.

In addition to those things there, gaming can now be played in high definition, the XBOX360 and the Playstation 3 are currently making games in HD.

Hope this helps!

generally you can't. However the transmission quality on standard does seem to have improved, possibly better source material being needed for the parallel HD transmission. HD is only available via an expensive Sky box and subscription at present, though there are a few trials on freeview ongoing in the London region. Also a properly set up LCD or Plasma always looks better regardless of HD/SD input. No need to bother for a few years yet, wait and see how things go

I would advise you not to get an HD television yet, because it's soo expensive. Seriously, wait for HD to actually, officially be here. HD has taken many years to even get to the UK, so I suggest you stay put, and the prices will come down. The UK is still not ready for HD.

NB: Terrestrial channels will start to "switch off" in 2008, and will finish in 2012. The UK will be digital in 2012! HD will follow soon after or during!!

Be patient though, it is cheaper and better to hold back!

I looked at a lot of LCD TV's before buying mine and compared the picture quality in shops. The quality actually varied quiet a lot. The main reason is probaly just the specific set you have - to a degree you get what you pay for. Most of the programs you are watching are not being broadcast in HD anyway - check the Sky+ menu system to see which are.
