The Christmas holiday is not the busiest travel day, week, or period of the year. Thanksgiving is the busiest travel week and days of the year.
People are willing to take 1-2 weeks for Christmas, but not for Thanksgiving (makes Thanksgiving travel more compressed), my co-workers are taking 2-3 weeks off for Christmas, but only Wednesday and Friday for Thanksgiving. People are more likely to travel home for Thanksgiving than memorial day or labor day.
My personal experience: Thanksgiving Wednesday-Sunday except Thursday are the worst days and week of the entire year for air travel.

In the States, I would think it would be the Friday before either Memorial Day or Labor Day. Those are the book ends for the summer travel season. Those holidays also don't have the pressure to spend them with family, so vacationers can go where ever they want. Memorial day also falls around the end of the school year for colleges and universities. So there's a lot of moving home or to new cities at that time.
Christmas also hits at the end of the semester. However, spending the holidays with family means staying at home for just as many people as it means going home.
Worldwide, I'd guess it's be around Christmas or Easter. These are the biggest Christian holidays. Between No. and So. America and Europe, Christian dominated nations make up most of the worlds wealthy nations, and poor people don't travel much.

No actually the busiest travel day of the year in the US is right after Thanksgiving. Not everyone in the states celebrates Christmas, but everyone celebrates Thanksgiving (usually with their families - which they travel to see)
