When purchasing a down comforter what should a person look for? What is the best type of down comforter to buy?

You should look for high thread count... 180 is normal so anything close to 300 is better... unless you don't mind being poked with the feather ends!

Look for washed down to cut down on the allergens. Also look for small stitched boxes as opposed to large ones, as the smaller they are, the less the feathers will flop around and they will stay in place.

You can get some really good ones now at Sears, and for a much better price than most other places.

Make sure the feathers are at least 60% down and not duck feathers...

You should look for the thread count on the cloth (over 200). If you don't have a very tight weave feathers are going to start poking through and coming out of the comforter. This is very uncomfortable.

I can't give you a brand name, but sadly, I can tell you that unless you spend big bucks on it you'll probably be disappointed.

Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren both offer nice down comforters (some are even washable) They aren't too badly priced for the quality.
Check J C Penny or Macy's

**make sure the one you buy is resistant against mildew & a nice higher thread count 200+.
