Like most things, it all depends on your definition of "most beneficial"
It is certainly easier to just use your card in an ATM than to worry about the safekeeping of cash Australian dollars, especially in a loose environment such as a backpackers.
Travellers cheques are safer, but then you have the hassles of actually cashing them, passport proof of ID, commission etc.
If you think that Sterling will fall against AUD, then lock in now and exchange, and vice verca.
You might even have your Sterling in an interest bearing account, so only draw it when you want it.
Personally, I favour the ATM method when travelling, but then you would be really stuffed if you managed to loose or have stolen your card.
To be honest, the differences in rates of exchange are minimal in absolute terms of money, so go with whatever method you think you would best be ale to handle.

If you use your debit card in australia you may be charged by your bank each time you take money out of a cash machine. All banks are different so check it out.
As the pound is stronger than the dollar change some money into aussie dollars before you go and take travellers cheques.
That way you're money will go even further

If you use and Nationwide Debit Card there are no hidden charges... so you get the actual excahnge rate for your money.
so put your money in the nationwide account and take it out in Oz or anywhere.
