Maybe you could describe it a bit better. Does she breath in and out very fast all of a sudden, and then stop after a while?
My previous dog did this when she entered REM sleep, the dreaming stage. She twitched and breathed hard, and even barked in her sleep at times. It was not a medical problem, but mearly the dog equivalent of someone talking in their sleep.
EDIT - Is she absolutely fast asleep when she does this? How long does it take her to stop?
Also, look at her eyes very closely while she does it - are they twitching a bit? If so, she is only dreaming.
Try just letting her go until she stops (unless it appears something really is wrong), and watch her closely. After a while, my dog would suddenly sigh, and then go back to breathing normally. I was scared to death the first time she did this, but it continued throughout her whole long life, and I realized after a while that it happened at the same time every sleep cycle.

Take her to the vet. It sounds like, but I've not a vet, she's lost her breath and can't catch it and is panicking because of it or she might have something caught half way down her throat just enough to let a little bit of air through and out.

Depends what dog it is? Mines a staffi cross, and when he goes to sleep he makes a wheezing sound. Its nothing to worry about normaly cos its common in some dogs. If it is really worrying you take it to the vets. But like i said he could just be snoreing (they do it as well hahaha).

do you have such a person as a vet near you? Actually that was a daft thing to say. Of course there is a vet because your dog will have been getting the yearly booster plus flea and worm treatment from the vet won't it? Take the dog to the vet.

What breed is she? Some pug nosed dogs are always wheezy and snuffly. I wouldn't worry too much if she's ok otherwise - eating, drinking and exercising normally. However, if she seems unwell at all, or wheezy after exercise, I would take her to the vets.

Dogs breath heavy when they are warm because they don't have any sweet glands, therefore breathing hard looses heat as there is a build up of blood at the tongue!

You need to take her to the vet and have her checked out in case she has heart problems. Of course she might only be dreaming! Better safe than sorry.

She could very well have ashma or another lung infection - The best thing to do is take her to the vet to be checked.
