I have a female cat in her teens and seems to have produced dreads within the last few months. Starting at the base of her tail, the matted fur has progressed up her body to the middle of her back. She has normal apetite and stool samples and seems to be fine otherwise. I'm just horified to think of taking her to a vet and them putting her down. If anyone has had or seen such problems before, please get in touch.

You should have kept up the brushing. Long haired animals need to be brushed daily. They are a lot of work. Moisture can cause severe matting if not kept brushed out. You need to take this poor animal to a groomer and have the coat shaved. It's not fair to your cat to pull these mats out as it's very painful.

If she is having breathing problems, she may have had a stroke, suffering from heart problems, or has a lung problem.

Please take her ASAP to a qualified vet.
