It is as safe as any other places in the world for 2 young female backpackers. Just like travelling everywhere else - DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Take the usual precautions and follow the safety rules. Yes, Thai people are hospitable and helpful but there are also bad ones - just like any country in the world. So, don't easily trust anyone. And stay in safe areas, with lots of people and DO NOT go places you are not supposed to go - either day or night.
There are thousands of backpackers who travelled to Thailand every year and they seem ok. The ones that get into trouble are the ones that think they know better or take risks. Like some of the answers above - don't accept food and drinks from strangers and if you go out drinking - watch your drinks!
Also, observe the local customs. Be polite and respectful when sightseeing especially at temples. Again, DO YOUR HOMEWORK and research do's and don'ts of Thailand. Keep in mind that you are in another country.

Wow! I was amazed at some of the answers given in response to this question. Many of the answers obviously were given by people who absolutely nothing about Thailand or Bangkok. I would say - Yes it is amazingly safe for anyone to travel to Bangkok. I would much rather be walking around late at night in any area of Bangkok than walking around in broad daylight in many American locations. Having been to Bangkok, I can tell you that most of the people will go out of their way to help you. That crime is very low compared to the US and that crimes against Westerners are almost non existent. Now is anything possible - yes of course. But the people of Bangkok and Thailand are some of the very sweetest people in the world and you should feel very comfortable in traveling there. Good luck

Yes, and I am from Thailand. Here is my 2 cents. You need to do more research and go to the safe places especially hotels. You and you friends need to stick together at all time then you are all right. Do not except any offer for free stuffs from strangers and go by the rule.Make sure you know where are you going. Not everyone will want to kidnap you for sex tour.Believe me there are more products to sell from the merchants than the customers. Since the Thai faces HIV-Aid crisis then no one buys and no one sells. So you are all right but do not tour around the Southern part because, the Terrorists are trying to take 4 provinces from the Thai people. Beside Bangkok you should go to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, these places are tourists friendly and beautiful places for back pack as well as safty. Give yourself a try and do not forget to come back and tell all.

having lived in Bangkok for a number of years now, I can say that Bangkok and Thailand is as safe as anywhere in the world and safer than many other places. Taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers will try to rip you off, but hey they will in most of Asia, South America and some other places too.
What I would say is use common sense, travel together, if one of you is going off on your own make sure your companion has your telephone number, get a destination and arranged a 'check in' time when you will call each other.
In the city do not dress provocatively - as if you were at a beach resort, Thais respect modesty, this applies to men as much as to women also.
Do not take too much money when you go out, ATMs are plentiful, do not wear expensive jewellry, and be aware of your surroundings and you will come to no harm. This is true for any travel destination and foreign or strange city/environment.
The Thais are most accommodating and friendly people, just respect them and their culture and you will be fine.

As an expat teenager living in Thailand, I find that BK is safe, as long as you take normal precautions and keep your wits about you. With friends my age i am able to take taxis, the 'sky train , occasionaly a tuk-tuk and river taxis all over the Bangkok region safely. You won't get into trouble if you don't ask for it, so dress conservativly, stay out of 'shady' areas, do some research about Bangkok and the culture, andyou guys should have a lot of fun

YES! Absolutely, dear. Just use common sense at all times e,g don't accept free drinks from strangers and take free rides etc. Bangkok is a modern country and its people are hospitable to tourists. Many of them speak English and their shopping malls are huge and carries designer brands. The young people are fashion conscious, carrying the latest mobile and electronic gadgets. It is people who have never been to Bangkok and think that is is infested with drug lord and thugs like what some Hollywood movies portrayed it to be.

Why not?! Don't be dumb, know your surroundings and where each other are at all times. Remember Thailand is very big and you can get lost very easy, especially in Bangkok. Go every where together, including the bathroom..wait for each other. When one starts walking off thats when the trouble starts. The main concern as well would be, when you guys go to the bars in the city..totally different then the bars here. The nightlife is big trouble there, especially if you guys like to get drunk..people will take advantage of that.

Thailand is the most popular place for backbackers and for good reason. It is safe or let's just say safer, in any walks of life ther is danger and I feel more safer in Thailand than I do in my hometown in the UK or for NEW York (why does new york get a bad name) Anyway have a look at bootsnall.com website it is an ideas factory for backbackers. My suggestion is to stay in Khao San Road area try NewSiam 2 (www.newsiam.net) recommended by my friend who travelled all over BKK it is clean restful place away from the night's noise.

As I am Thai people, I would agree with most of people who come to share with idea and opinion.
Bangkok have so many pickpocket persons but do you think that only this city have? How's about New York City, Shang Hai City in China. Some people say the local Thai people harm many tourist people but how do you make sure that your neighbor who live across with your street do not harm you and your family?
What I would like to say every where, every country's in this world have good and bad people?
So, what I recommend to you is before you travel you need to do more home work, like what the phone number of local police when you get emergency, you can call with.
Don't go or talk with any stranger people whom you think you are not trust.
Hopefully, it will be little help to you make some decision.

many of the lodges in Bangkok would be quite low priced. I went in 2006 and stayed in a 5 action picture star hotel for £12 a evening. I booked it in the past I left the united kingdom. pass on your close by trip agent.
