Is there a range of where their considered to be too old to get spayed? I have an 8 y/o female feline, and I want her to get spayed ..but Im scared she is too old now and to get spayed now might be more harm to her than good.

I asked bcuz ..i want to get it done ..but Im worried not about the possibility of the operation not being a success ...the long term outcome is what Im worried about. My sister in law got her (Healthy) cat spayed at about 5/6 yrs old ..and later within the year Sweetpea (cat) started to develop little knots on her back that were painful if any1 rubbed her. Her vet never comfirmed it as something that might have occurred due to being spayed at such a late age, but we all sorta suspected. So of course she didnt want Sweetpea to suffer ..so she had her put to sleep. And I really do not want to put my little girl through that. I do have an appt. set for her next Wednesday to see a vet. which according to her previous owner ..will be her very first time going ...So Im a lil scared ...her and me ..cuz I dont know how I'll react if something was found wrong with her.

The surgery is not what to be scared of, but the anistetics. Some older cats can handle this. Some can't. It all depends on the health of the cat. Talk to your vet and have him/her do a full check-up on your kitty. He/she can also run a few tests to see if it is a good idea or not.

However, putting an older animal through surgery is always risky. Why haven't you gotten her spayed already? And why do you want to do it now? It might not be worth the risk even if your kitty gets the "ok" from your vet.

Cats are never too old to be spayed!! But after 7 there is a SLIGHT risk of breast cancer in both male and female cats (and dogs) with the number of heat seasons they have gone thru. You should really fix animals early as the benefits outweigh the risks, but at any age it is advisable for the animal. Just go to a competent vet and get a blood test to make sure all is well. The blood test will make sure there is no pre-existing condition that will complicate surgery. Otherwise, give the old girl some peace from heat!!

A cat should get spayed before he/she reaches two years old.

An eight year old cat may not be able to handle such a tragistic change in his/her life. Considering he/she has gone eight years without being spayed or having a major surgery such as this.

I understand your concern, and having an unspayed female cat can be a pest. But its best to leave her unspayed.

Surgery at such a age could cause cancer, illness, liver problems, stomach problems, digestion issues, or even diarrhea.

You seem like you have strong feelings for your cat, and I respect that - Just be sure to make the right choice!

Good luck!

No, she is not too old. We have spayed many an older cat at our clinic - mostly rescued adults/strays. The anesthetics and analgesics (pain medication) used nowadays are very safe. At our clinic, we do dental cleanings (which require anesthesia) on cats up to 18-19 years old with no problems. For older cats, we require a full preanesthetic blood profile and keep them on supportive IV fluids to keep them hydrated, their blood pressure up and to give us a portal into a vein should emergency drugs be needed (which is extremely rarely). The benefits of spaying your cat outweigh any anesthetic risks (assuming physical exam and bloodwork are okay), so I say, go for it!

Hi Real, Why did you want so long? I really don't thing think she is 2 old to be spayed. But if she became pregnant would really be awful hard on her. Take her to the aspca, and have her spayed by them. The cost is alot lower than taking her to the vet. This is were i take all my dogs,to be fixed,or for shots, and flea prevention.

Take her to a vet. If she is in good health, I doubt that the spaying operation would do much harm. She may however be a little miffed at you.

If your cat is in good health, 8 years old is not too old to undergo anesthesia. Take her to your vet, and let him/her check the cat and determine whether she is up to the surgery.

well why didn't you do it sooner if you're such a good owner and soooo darn worried? that aside, talk to your vet. have presurgical bloodwork done. make sure they keep her on a monitor for her heart, breathing etc..it's going to be costly but you deserve it. and she deserves to be spayed. poor poor kitty, i'm so sorry. how many unwanted babies did you have to bring into this world?
