I have only joined this company for a month and need advice on whether I should get my lady boss a Christmas gift. If yes, would appreciate your ideas. She is in her late 40s.

Serious answers only pls

Thank you

My budget is about $20 - $30.

Yes, I am concerned about being seen as "sucking up" so like to know what sort of gifts are appropriate and otherwise.

Thanks again

Should I get gifts for co-workers? I am really not sure of the etiquette involved here.

If you are new to the office and you give your boss a gift and no one else does, you may embarrass your boss and cause resentment among your coworkers who will see this as an attempt at ‘bribing’ the boss. If you are unsure of your office’s traditions on giving a gift to the boss, then ask two or three collegues what the gift giving etiquette is for your office.

If coworkers do exchange gifts with the boss, then by all means get him a gift. Make sure that your gift to the boss is of a non personal nature and is nothing too expensive or you may upset coworkers, the boss, or worse, the boss's spouse! Again, ask around and find out what types of things people traditionally give in your office.

If giving the boss is not a tradition in your office, then a card expressing your good wishes and thanks for the job he is doing is perfectly appropriate. If this doesn’t seem enough, then perhaps it is up to you to start a new office tradition.

Christmas Gift For My Boss

Ask around in the company what the custom is. Normally, the answer will be "no". The boss or employer should give YOU a Christmas present to thank you for your hard work the last month.

Giving your boss a gift could be misinterpreted. She probably still has to give you an evaluation or weigh in on your raise etc. Not good to match with "gifts" even if they are harmless.

I think an email, appreciating the collaboration and happy holiday wishes is the right way to go with a boss.

I was once in a management position, and a new employee gave me a Christmas gift of some fudge wrapped in a lovely little white box, lined with wax paper, so it would not stick together...and with it was a note, that said something to the effect of:...
" I wanted you to know how much I appreciate the opportujity of working with you.
All the best, from Amy"
That was 20 years ago, and I still remember her!
Just thought I'd share that!
Gratitude is a precious thing.

I think a christmas gift is fine...but be careful about spending too much on her because you don't want to set tongues wagging about you being a boot licker. You are, after all, new in the company. You could get her a simple box of chocolates and a christmas card. Or you could just bake some cookies for your close colleagues and give her a couple more.

Yes. However, it should be something small because of the short period of time you have been there.

Try a gift certificate for say Walmart, or Target. It doesn't have to be more than $10, but you're just saying thank you and I am wishing you the best for the New Year. Good luck!

Don't assume anything, because you are new to the company, I also believe a card is the safest way to go. Next year you will be more at ease and will have been able to observe and in a better position to make the gift choice.

How about a gift card to Starbucks -- even if she is not a big coffee drinker, they also have many types of tea, pastries, fruit, etc. and all sorts of other drinks.

A $30 gift card would allow her to go back at least a second time, too.

Good Luck

As you have recently joined this company, you wouldn't be knowing much about her tastes and preferences, better buy her gift coupons which she can take to the respective store and buy whatever she wants or likes

A card should do, unless everyone else brings gifts. I then would bring a nice ornament for her family tree. That's a small yet appreciated gift. Not sure how much you would want to spend. Don't over do it though!
