Say you're in hell. You did something terrible, such as being a Catholic and failing to attend mass on Sunday. Can you say "OK I'm sorry. I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior?" Will God say "Too late, game over. You must burn for eternity."?

It's too late. Purgatory was designed to collect money from the early Catholic church to forgive the sins of the dead. That's why you are alive, so you'll have time to repent before you get to that point.

The answer to the question "can you repent in hell" is no.

This world is a test or trial. Therefore we should repent in this world, not after the Judgment Day where there result will be given out to us.

Analogy:
We take exam in school. Before the time is up, we can still change our answer on the answer paper. But if we have submitted our answer paper and the result has come out, we can only see the result whether we pass or fail. We cannot say to the examiner to give back the answer paper so that we can change wrong answer with the correct answer. We cannot do that as before the exam, we have been given ample time to study. If we don't study then it is our wrong doing and the examiner cannot be blame if examiner fail us because we give wrong answer.

If you want to repent, repent now before the result come out.

Remember the words supposedly written above the gates of hell: "Abandon All Hope You Who Enter Here."

Once in hell, you can certainly repent. It just won't do any good.

That said, Catholics believe in a more enlightened system of judgment than a simple pass/fail system.

We figure God won't allow anyone to go to hell who might still be satisfactorily purified in Purgatory.

All Protestant objections aside, Jesus gave power to his universal church to bind and loose, both on earth AND in heaven, so if Purgatory didn't exist way back in eternity, it certainly does now.

That's just one of the reasons it's good to be a Catholic!

I believe that God is a forgiving God...if you repent...you will be saved....but Im sure that the repent must be from the heart. However, I dont believe in a burning hell...I see hell as the world today...just turn on the news and tell me if that isnt Hell...If you dont get life right the first time...or do whatever it is you are sent here to do...you will be back....lol...but for real though...I dont think youd burn in hell....

That's what I was taught by the Catholic church. Ditching Sunday Mass is a mortal sin. Mortal sin means if you die before you make a formal Confession you roast in hell forever and ever and ever.

Iris says it's not so - maybe they've changed the rules. Catholic doctrine is a moving target.

Hell is not an eternal place of punishment. It is the second death, sinners will be completely destroyed and wiped from existance, dead forever.

Similar to the athiests version of dead "dead and gone" etc.

It will be by fire, and its effects will be eternal, but an eternal place of torment is a Greek myth, maybe older, which the Church incorporated into its doctrines. This completely contradicts the lie of satan "ye shall not surely die" and the truth of God "now, lest he (man) put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden" Found in Genesis chapter 3. Sinning man will never eat of the tree of life, therefore will never live forever. God says that sinners will be destroyed, not allowed to live forever in eternal torment. Would a loving God really do that friends? punish us eternally for a short life of disobedience? No, not even satan himself will be eternally tortured. The wicked will be destroyed forever.

Just for the sake of argument--------I see alot of Christian answers here. Let's take another viewpoint here. In Islam, you can repent while in Hell. All you need to do it to say that you believe that there is no G-d but G-d (and really believe it) and G-d will take you out of Hell and to Heaven.

Now, I must look up the Jewish viewpoint, as I have never heard it. Then Judaism does not put as much emphasis on Hell as Islam and Christianity does.

Maybe. Maybe not. But I would look at it this way if it was not. Heaven is just the greater of two goods OF course you could look at it as if hell is the lesser of two evils but that would be bad imo. I guess its a glass half full or half empty thing except in this case it would be a glass full of fire :)

Lol someone named True Peace preaching hell... look down below for inspiration on why not to be in a cult...

And then there is the guy who says we will be destroyed compleatly... IF given the option to live in hell forever or not exist I might have to think about that one for awhile of course God isnt much of a friend of free will I guess...

i think of no longer. as quickly as in hell it quite is too previous due. someone has been given substantial opportunities to settle for God, grow to be a Christian, etc. at the same time as right here in the international. they had their opportunities. They knew what the implications may be yet they did no longer opt to have faith it. They felt they understand greater suitable and that they've been too smart to have faith in God. . They confirmed disrespect, ridiculed, and anger in direction of God, the Church, and Christians. In hell they might see that they've been being conceited, self typical, spiteful, and had made a substantial mistake. Now that they are "getting what they paid for" they opt to "exchange their song". It does not paintings that way. they had their opportunities, a lot of them, yet they blew it. seem at it like this: someone knows to no longer scouse borrow yet is going to a save, hides something in his coat, and heads out the door. The alarm is going off, he's stopped, and the stolen merchandise is got here upon. He ought to assert he's sorry and grant to place the object back or pay for it however the protection person will say that it quite is too previous due. Now they ought to stand the undesirable outcomes. They knew to no longer scouse borrow. They knew if caught they had be in hardship. yet they did it any way. undesirable selection ! The question approximately repentance in hell works in regards to the comparable way.

Well the curse states that all that have sinned shall die and be subject to grave and sheol. So if you are in sheol. Jesus is not going there again just because you call him there. Actually per hebrews chapter 6 and 10 it declares that he will not be subject to sheol again for mans sake. So the answer is once you die and go to sheol you are going to remain there. Christ spirit is poured out in the earth not in hell.
