We live in Michigan and for personal reasons we have recently decided to move. Our new puppy won't be able to stay inside with us. She is about 10 weeks old. We'll have an 'igloo' dog house for her and adequate fencing, but will she be okay? We plan to put a tarp up to help block most of the wind. I know they are typically 'outside' dogs but she is still so young. I'm worried the cold will be too much.

okay, you guys are making it sound like i'm an awful dog owner. i LOVE my dog. my husband and i have been forced to move in with my parents for financial reasons and my dad will not allow the dog inside. i'm hoping he'll let her stay in the garage since that is obviously better but there is no guarantee. stop giving me so much grief. i don't even have the money to put the dog in the paper to try to sell her and i absolutely love her.

You are right to be concerned. Michigan is a cold place and this puppy is too young and not really an "outdoor" breed. She is still at a stage where training is crucial and it will be difficult to do so if she stays outdoors. If you absolutely have to keep her outdoors, you should really consult your veterinarian as well as your local SPCA to make sure that your dog pen meets specifications - If this is not possible, maybe it would be best to find her a new home.

Springer Spaniel Puppies Michigan

Absolutely not. No matter the age, Springer Spaniels are a breed that want to be physically and emotionally close to you, and frankly, it is very selfish of you to expect it to live outside alone. I don’t care how many times you plan to visit it - unless you’re planning on pitching a tent out there and living in it, you need to do the right thing and either make arrangements for it to live inside with you, or find someone else who will give that wonderful dog the life it really deserves - right by her family’s side in a warm, safe, house. There are no excuses not to, other than not trying hard enough to make arrangements, or perhaps your own selfishness.

If you don’t care at all for the dog’s emotional health, then I don’t know why you care for its physical health, but since you asked - no, a dog house and a tarp will most definitely not be enough for a Springer of any age to survive Michigan winters. Dog fur isn’t some magic coat that will bock the cold, unless the breed was designed for such a thing. If it would be too cold for you, then it will be too cold for her.

Don’t do this to your dog. If you truly love her and you can’t give her all of the care she deserves, then give her to someone who can.

If you were 10 weeks old and out in the cold, do you think you'd survive? No, you wouldn't.

Talk some sense into your dad, or try to find a friend that can take the dog for you while you stay there. Even if the puppy stays in the garage, it'll be like it's in prison since it can't go in the house.

No, the puppy should not be kept outside.

Dogs are pack animals and need to be with the family - and that's YOU. Backyard dogs also are much more likely to develop behavior problems such as barking, digging, and aggression. If for some reason you end up not being able to keep her, there is a good chance she will be unable to be adopted to another home if she is a backyard dog. Please reconsider your decision and if it is possible, she needs to be indoors. If not, it's best for you to find a new home for her where she will be included in the family.

More then likely she won't stay in the igloo, she'll be lonely and bark and cry alot, i do not like the idea of dogs being penned can you sell her to someone else who has the room and time for her ??if you decide to pen her I'd put a heater made for dogs beds under her covers, but she might dig or chew it up!?!?if it were me I'd get her a deep Rubbermaid tote (LG) and keep her in my bedroom at night at least until shes older,in the spring.

I believe you already know the answer!!

This is a baby, a puppy who needs companionship, and you're going to dump her outside in a place with adequate fencing (that'll make her happy!) and she'll get no socialization, no training at a critical time in her life.

It shouldn't cost you too much money to take this poor puppy to a shelter so she can get a real home with someone to look after her!

no it's not. she is used to the indoors and if she is still so young you are worried, cause i'm pretty sure it gets cold where you are, she needs to be inside. maybe you should try staying outside for a few days in the wind and cold, and then if you're ok, find her a home where someone can take care of her.

I agree with everyone else. The puppy should NOT stay outside. Either keep her in, or give her to a good home that will keep her indoors. Please keep her feelings into consideration.
