Well, I hate to say it, but it sure sounds like flea dirt. Often time, especially with kittens, you cannot see the fleas, but you will see the droppings they leave behind. It usually appears as small black specks. Good way to tell is to take a little of the dirt, put it on a white piece of paper, and put a small drop of rubbing alcohol or water on it. If the paper looks reddish-brown it is probably fleas. If thats not it, you might want to have her checked for ear mites.

I have to agree with the other two posts. It sounds like flea dirt, and you are finding it in the right areas too. Fleas love the neck and ears.

I know she is an indoor cat, but you can bring fleas into your house. They jump on you, and then they get your pets.

Check her belly and in her arm pits. That and go get a flea comb. Even if its not fleas, the comb can help get the "dirt" out. Try to give her a flea bath too. What ever you do, DO NOT use a flea collar or flea medicine from a pet store. Contact your vet. Only use what he/she suggest.

And if you really don't think it's fleas, take your cat into the vet. He/she can give you a straight answer.

I checked my kitten for fleas, and I did not see any on him, or any in the house. I checked for well over a week. He did not scratch a lot, did not have any visible bites either.

I also read that if your kitten has one flea on him/her, there is probably 5-10 for that one flea in your house. So you probably won't find on him/her.

I would check the black specks and if they turn reddish/brownish when wet - its flea dirt.

I only saw my kitten's fleas when I bathed him, and I only saw 2 fleas or so. I was able to rid of them (around the house) before it got serious.

p.s. I even google'd the issue --- and no website suggested anything except for fleas.

Hi Kick, You say, it's mainly around her ears, and neck. If she doesn't have fleas, but she has all the signs. Anyway, check inside her ears, and see if she has a build up in her ears.If she does, and she has been picking at her ears, she may have ear mites. Go to Petsmart, and get a bottle of ear mite drops for cats, and put some drops in her ears. The back of the bottle will tell you how many drops to put in her ear. If this is not the case. No fleas,or ear mites,i would take her to the vet.You need to know what is going on with your kitten.

Right off the bat what you describe sounds like flea dirt (which is actually flea waste). A good way to check if actually flea dirt is to take a paper towel and dampen it, place the black specks on the damp paper towel, if they dissolve and leave a red tinge IT IS flea dirt. Fleas eat blood and the waste will leave a red color when wet....
If it does not dissolve and leave a red color, kitty probably got into something around the house and you should inspect your home for the culprit.

Definetly fleas.
You may not think its fleas or want it to be fleas
