Can you use the phrase 'put to shame' with innanimate nouns? I came across it on the Internet but somehow it doesn't feel right.

Yes. You can use it as a metaphor. I think there is a term for it - personification, maybe. To give an object human characteristics.

i think it means "to expose something" but i'm not sure.
