Boeing's are usually more traditional designs, Airbus usually more innovative, in fact the first airliner with fly-by-wire and the first airliner with composite materials are Airbus.
I think that now they are almost the same, but probably Airbus are a little better, but we can say they are at the same level.
Airbus overcame Boeing last year in the airliners sector(Don't know for number of airliners or for business volume), while some years ago it was a weak competitor, now It's the world leading company in airliners manufacturing. This means that Boeing is growing slower than Airbus.
I think that the answers should be almost 50%-50%, but a lot of people answered Boeing only because it's American, being the living evidence of their protectionism, in fact USA are used to buy foreign products only when there are really no alternatives(like for Marine One, where the Agusta EH101 were the only possible alternative), otherwise they choose the American alternative although it's not the best.
I'm Italian, and Italian industries are NOT part of the Airbus consortium(UK,France,Germany,Spain). Italian main airplanes industries (Alenia and Aermacchi) works(or worked) with both (Airbus and Boeing), but Alenia is more linked to Boeing, in fact B-787 fuselages are going to be built in Italy, so for interest I should say "Boeing is better", but I don't because I don't think it's true.

As a flight attendant, I prefer working on Boeings - especially the 757. I can't quote any mechanical facts, but something about the Boeing felt intuitively more steady and reliable. Maybe the advanced 'fly-by-wire' technology of the Airbus makes me wonder if the pilots would be able to override a computer glitch? Also, as an American, I guess I'm a sappy loyalist to our product. Since the Airbus is still fairly recent to a lot of airlines'fleet, only time will tell if they hold up over the years as well as the Boeings. One of the aircraft types I was happy to see eliminated from our fleet - the Fokker -
a real piece of junk!

The two aviation companies who have been competing each other for a long long time. Years ago Boeing made its B-747 which remained the biggest aircraft for decades. Then, Airbus made its A-380 which is the most luxurious and most spacious aircraft till now.
As for me, I would choose Boeing as the best as though A-380 is the biggest aircraft but the coming soon B-787 would be the most luxurious. Besides, the A-380 can not land on most of the remote airports all over the world due to its enormous wing span.

Both companies build good aircraft and some types built by each company are competitive with the other company's product.

The aircraft built by either company are built with international support by a lot of subcontractors. The Airbus will likely contain a large number of American components along with components built in other countries. Meanwhile Boeing aircraft contain components built in a number of other countries.

Both companies have respectable building histories.

It comes down to what kind of aircraft do you want and why? Then you can consider price, lead time and long term supportability.

I have more faith and experience with Boeing products, so I am inclined to choose Boeing, which is also an older company and combines the experience of McDonnell Douglas, which merged with Boeing several years ago.

However I don't have any problems with Airbus products and would consider them safe and high quality aircraft.

As a passenger, I feel safer in a boeing. As an investor I would also go for Boeing not only because they build more practical planes but also because they operate in cheap dollar area whereas Airsbus operates in an expensive euro area.
