Noooo, really? I mean, in the enlightened 21st century? Thanks for posting this. You seem to be getting a lot of answers saying that belief in Hell is a fundamental (word used carefully!) of being allowed to call oneself a Christian, but a lot of answers I've got on the subject before come back with divisions pointing out that the so-called "Lake of Fire" is for demons only, not humans, and that "Hell" for humans is supposed to be "the grave". So maybe the question isn't so much how many believe in Hell, but what it is they're thinking of when they use the word.

On a separate note, I saw some research recently that said that 59% of Americans now believe in a literal Hell, a real Devil etc. I don't have figures for other nations or the world, but 59% of the world's leading superpower is pretty mind-boggling and scary to me.

Well, I would hope 100% but I have heard that a lot of Christians do not! Jesus went there for three days before rising up and coming back to life. The Bible is pretty clear about Hell. Look at the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31.

Almost all Christians believe the wrong kind of Hell that is not taught in the Bible. Most Christians believe in the Hell Fire that is very contradictory to the teaching of the Bible. Hell fire that is very hot and yet is not able to burn up the people thrown into it. They will last forever. They teach about a loving God, and yet so cruel to let the sinners roast forever and ever throughout eternity.
But actually the Bible tells about the kind of Hell that shows how fair and merciful God is. He created us from dust, and give as a free choice. If want to obe Him, then He will let us live in heaven for ever with Him. But if we do not want to do His will, heaven will be a miserable place to us anyway, so He is going to destroy satan, all his followers, sin, sickness and all pollution, and other consequencer of sin in a Hell fire that is so hot that it will turn everything into dust.

1 “For behold, the day is coming,
Burning like an oven,
And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble.
And the day which is coming shall burn them up,”
Says the LORD of hosts,

“ That will leave them neither root nor branch.
2 But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
With healing in His wings;
And you shall go out
And grow fat like stall-fed calves.
3 You shall trample the wicked,
For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet
On the day that I do this,”
Says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 4:1-3)

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.[c] 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
(2 Peter 3:10-13)

Your question is an oxymoron. The mere fact that one is a Christian, says that Christians believe in Heaven. We believe in the Lord's prayer, Our Father, who art in Heaven. If a person believes in a Heaven, it sort of goes hand in hand that they also would believe in a Hell.

You ask for a percentage? Try 100% of people that are Christians, believe in Hell.

Lets see, let me speak for all the people out there that claim to be Christian. I would have to say all of them do, or they would not consider themselves to be Christians.

See, hell as you ask is an essential part of a "Christians" belief, as also with Heaven, God, Jesus, Satan, The Holy Spirit, ect, ect. all in no particular order mind you. So in my honest opinion and of all the Christians I have met in my lifetime, which by the way has only been 40 years, I have not met any that do not believe in hell.

what percent actually cares if they believe in hell or not?
this is a rather pointless question seeings how you would have to pole all the Christians in the world in order to get
an accurate result and poling a small cross section yahoo users is hardly representative of all the Christians in the world .

All Christians do, because the bible states there is a heaven and a hell, thus all Christians beleive the bible and have faith in it. Th e mormons don't beleive in hell but they violate the bible a lot and aren't considered Christians, same with catholics. Go in Christ

I dont know, but probably a pretty good amount. According to the Bible, it's a real place and that's where people would go if they turn away from God.
