The adults I've spoken with that were only children always said they wished they had siblings. They fear that when their parents grow old and pass over, they will be left alone. They don't learn to share things properly nor do they take others opinions in their stride. Oh yeh, the parents make sure they have loads of friends etc. but it's not the same. The 'only child' do seem to have BIG regrets after watching other children playing or mentioning a brother or sister. After listening to them, it seems selfish to have just one child.

Well, I'm an only child myself and both my parents are still married. In some ways its made me an independent person. But there are some downfalls in my case. When I was little, my parents had a lot of marital problems. And naturally, my mom would always project her anger at my dad onto me at times. I'm not saying this is the case for all only chidren with married parents. I'm just giving you a taste of what it was like for me. How an only child is affected by having married parents depends on many other factors, such as the parents' relationship (peaceful vs. chaotic), sociocultural factors, the child's peer network, etc. Every only child is going to have individual differences.

It will be fun. I am the only child and my parents are still married and I was the centre of their attention. The only drawback was when I got married, I missed all the attention I got and it took me a while to get used to being ignored.

well.... im an only child, and my parents are married. i think i turned out fine. but, i know a lot of my friends who have siblings... and their parents were not married, but turned out just as good as i did.. if not better...

so i guess it all depends on the family.

Being an only child makes you independant... helps you take decisions by yourself.
The downside being:
- not able to share with others
- having less friends
