Boss 429 Has Hemi heads......
Boss 429 complete Engine is built just for the heads and Valve Train under rated at 375 HP push out like 450 HP to the rear wheels... With Over head cam's... Was Nascar motor, that was its main reason for being and work very well in the Drag Racing world...
Super Cobra Jet is almost the best regular V8 Ford engine. With its FE block 429 it was only surpasted by its SCJ 428 which makes more Horse Power than the SCJ 429... Also the SCJ 429 is the same style block as the newer 460's but stronger back in the day...
Best Ford engine for this time frame was the Cammer 427 Ford engine... With Tunnell port heads...
Happy Motoring.....

The 429 SCJ was an improved 429 , larger ports , valves , and a 4 bolt block.
The BOSS 429 has semi hemi heads more like a Chrysler hemi.
Both motors are in the "385" series and have nothing to do with the "FE" blocks. Neither one hade an overhead cam .
NASCAR started using restrictor plates in 1971 to level the field between the manufactures and the big motors were no longer an advantage.
Fords 427 motors were a lot more powerful than the 429 scj or 428 scj , they cost more from all the machining that had to be done , and with thinner cylinder walls were not as user friendly for daily driving.

They cylinder heads. a Boss 429 is essentially a Hemi motor it uses a non-true Hemispherical combustion chamber (commonly known as a polyshperical chamber) the Super Cobra Jet uses what is known as a Wedge Head. Both of them have LARGE intake and exhaust ports. The bottom ends of the motors are virtually identical. the Better of the 2 motors IS the BOSS 429. OHHH and there is no Overhead Cam version of this motor like someone else mentioned the Overhead Cam NASCAR motor was the Ford 427 SOHC "Cammer" which has absolutley NOTHING in common with the 429.

Boss 429 was built to get it into Stock car racing. Not very many were built in 69 and 70. Racing requirements were for 500 to be sold to the public. It ran low 12's/high 11's in the 1/4 mile off the showroom floor.
I still remember reading the article in one of the car mags back in '69. I was 14 at the time.

Wow, super pricey choice there for a car you won't want to launch in anything but a straight line. Mustang could never get the hard-points right for beefing up suspensions for more than subtle turns. Besides that if you want to run the 429 scj you'll probably need access to av-gas. You could check in with the folks that operate the Pebble Beach auctions and see if they've got anything coming available.

one minor correction--the Y-block is an earlier engine design,
not like the later FE and 385 engines. The Y preceded both and common displacements were 292 and 312.
