This happens fairly routinely to the students in our welding lab, and is not all that uncommon in industry, either. It has even happened to me on occasion. If it only occurred once to your husband, and under the conditions you described, the likelihood is that he is perfectly fine. However, I would agree with previous answerers that he should still be checked out, just as a precautionary measure. The intense ultraviolet light produced by a welding arc can readily damage the cornea and retina.
A helmet with an auto-darkening lens would make a perfect Christmas gift for your hubby. :)

Eyesight is way to important to risk - go to an ER as quickly as possible - there might be nothing wrong, or there could be severe damage depending on how much time he spent with his eyes exposed.
In general, most folks are fine, but its simply not worth the risk of possibly losing his sight, and you should get documentation in case of any future problems that might arise... worker's compensation etc.
I know this sounds paranoid and alarmist - but to be clear I think he'll be fine... but its better to be safe than suffer the impact of that one in a million...

You need to see a doctor ASAP, even if you do not believe they can help. It is mainly for the documentation of the after effects which is an occupational hazard.
You need to have a record. and they can treat it somehow.I sent you a website as to what measures the emergency docotr can do.

Call a Hospital and ask for ER, ask to speak to a Nurse in ER, usually they'll refer you and tell you.
