Best book to read is John Kakauer's latest. There is a lot of evidence that what Smith thought up was an attempt to garner money and power and not a religion. The way the church is situated now is still about money and power.

No. You might want to check out a couple of books written by Truman Madsen. If you need help understanding the Book of Mormon, try reading Hugh Nibley's "Lehi in the Desert" or W. Cleon Skousen's "Treasures from the Book of Mormon," or there are several other very good books out there. If you come at it from a Jewish slant, it gets more and more convincing. Have a happy day.

Yeah, he claimed to be clairvoyant, and conned a bunch of people in to paying him to divine the location of treasure. Charges were brought against him, and he was found guilty.
Oh, and then he made up a religion, which is, of course, the best scam of all.
