no. it is just old-fashioned. why should you have to wait until the shy guys finally get up the guts?

No, it doesn't really make a difference. If it is meant to be, it will be regardless of who initiates it. He may never know there's a chance unless you tell him.
But, remember, the excitement of having a crush is so much better than the relationship itself. Besides it may end up badly and ,not only have you lost that excitement, but now you have to start all over with a new crush!
They will come and go for most of your life. Enjoy the freshness and excitement of it - relationships can be so crappy sometimes! Good luck! :)

Some people can be cruel about it if they don't like you back... Personally I'd wait till you were reasonably sure its going to be reciprocated.

I think he'll be flattered if you did that. Does he "know" you? or like you? If yes, then no harm in telling him you like him.
