For normal use, the Home edition is perfect. The professional edition is better when the PC is used into a network environment -like into a company. The professional edition allows more network connections and has better sharing abilities, including the option to easily create Internet Sites into your PC.

You can buy the Home edition and install it. But first talk with the geek at a place like Best Buy to make sure this edition is the best for your needs. For many home users, the Home edition works very well, but it's not as robust as the more expensive professional version. Professional offers more networking options for example.
Best wishes!

Depends
If you only use your computer for small things like email and aim, use home edition. If you actually use it for actuall important things, buy proffessional. But if you go back to the guy you bought the bootleg from, i'm sure he'll hook you up.

There is no way to "convert" your copy to a legitimate copy. You have to buy a legitimate copy.
On the question of whether you should buy a Home or Pro version, it really depends on what you're using it for. If you're at home, a HOME version would suffice.

If you buy Home edition you need to re-install the windows. If you buy Pro you need to re-activate the windows verison.

prefer Windows Professional Edition rather then the Home edition as the Home Edition for those who play more games only

The XP Pro costs over $300! Did you know that? (sux, doesn't it?)
you're almost better off just getting another PC with more memory anyway - you'll quickly outgrow 256! Besides, I'm not positive, but I think 512 is recommended for XP.
