Ouch! 8.6 is very old! I bet he re-formatted the disk and re-installed old 8.6.

You'll have to install os x again, and they don't include 9.2 with tiger, so you'll have to install an earlier 10.2 or so, to get 9.1 or 9.2 that can co-exist with os x.

No problem. Go to the web site listed below and download the Startup Disk Control Panel, version 9.2.1 and drop it onto the System Folder folder. You'll see a message "...needs to be put in the Control Panels folder...Do you want to replace the existing one?". Clcik Yes. Now you can open that control panel and select OS X, restart.

Interesting. I wasn't aware that OSX and 8.6 could work on the same machine. If you are in Classic mode, then that should be OS9. Locate the control panels, see if you can use the start up disk control panel to change it back.
