If you can run a candle or crayon on the track the roll top rolls on (use a white or light or clearish candle so as not to have mess or color everywhere.) The wax should help the top run along the track without hanging up or sticking.

Use tung oil. Not just in the tracks but your entire desk. Not will it enrich the desk finish, it'll keep your desk top roll like a slick skate on cold ice.

in the OOOLD days they use to use chalk or soap. You could use graphite (YUCK!!).... Personally with 17 years in woodworking. I'd clean the track with a MILD soap (like ivory). WATCH that FINISH!!!!! then I'd rewax it with beeswax... If THAT doesn't take care of it.. (psst.. a little old english) ... I've even used a little baby oil but not on a fine wood piece. Mostly for wooden toys, break boxes, etc...

Wax the tracks. A small candle, or if you have lots of money, special zipper lubricant will do the job.

you might try some wax, that works on many things. Open the top and rub wax in the groove, remove all dirt and and debris first.
