they can be lit, but why? decorative candles are just that. I have many "decorative" candles, but even in a blackout, I wouldn't light them. Keep some plain utility candles around for emergencies, keep your wife happy.

Old superstition is that it is bad luck to have a candle in your house that has never been lit if on display. This doesn't include the candles you store for use when the others are used up. But it does include any candle displayed. They only need to burn for a minute or so at least once

OH SOOOO VERY NOT TRUE an unlit candle is a bad bad thing if you like luck light them up. even if it is just one time and they do not burn ever again. In fact some people will not even bring a candle inside untill they light it. Even if you do not beleive that it is it bad luck to have an unburned candle in the house, there is no question that it is just bad ettiquette, and if a Decorative candle sits un lit it looks well DECORATIVE purpously placed and ANNOYING like a huge FEINGNOWAY!

I think what she meant was that particular candle was for show only. Some candles are placed in strategic places simply for decorative purposes, and for their scent to make the room smell nice. You dont have to light every candle you see in a room. It will make it too hot.
Or she may be reserving them for bath time ad some special times just for the two of you.
Just say lets buy some more of those the next time we go to the mall.

All candles are meant to be used. Your wife just doesn't want to ruin the shape of the candles. She bought them for their decorative value, not the ambience of a lit candle.

If they were designed to be decorative than probably not. Decorative candles would be for show and not for burning. If you want to burn candles I would suggest going out and buying some cheap candles from the dollar store. Just like there can be decorative spoons, and decorative swords, so to can there be decorative candles

I think it depends on each person's preference, but if she wants some really pretty decorative candles, I looked on the Internet and found some kind of candles here that seem to last forever, and you can burn them too - sort of a compromise.

Weeelll, some candles be just too purty to burn......
Seriously, your wife must have an eye for beauty (something mine totally lacks) and putting up decorative candles makes the room harmonious or whatever. HOWEVER ~ If there comes a time when you have a blackout and everything is dark, please don't hesitate to light them. They are made out of regular candle wax too.

I suppose some people may think a candle is just too pretty to burn away, but I"ve never actually heard of buying candles just to put in holders to never light? What's the point?

Yes, they do make candles that say "for decorative purposes only". Some of these may contain lead or other things you don't want released in the air you breathe. Also, some of them smell really bad if you do light them. Just smile and say "Yes, Dear."
